Michael Mann Launches Archives Project With Inside Look at ‘Ferrari’

As a massive fan of Michael Mann‘s work, I am absolutely thrilled about his latest venture – the launch of his Archives site. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for film enthusiasts like myself to gain an unprecedented insight into the mind of one of the greatest directors of our time.

Michael Mann is giving fans a peek into how he makes films through the introduction of his Archives website.

The online initiative, accessible here, was launched on Tuesday with a spotlight on Adam Driver’s upcoming 2023 film “Ferrari,” where he portrays race car driver and entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari, and Penélope Cruz as his wife Laura Ferrari. Visitors can buy entry to this interactive site, and further pages dedicated to other Mann productions are intended in the future.

The Mann’s Archives website features twenty new mini-documentaries, offering behind-the-scenes insights into the filmmaking process and technology used in the production. Additionally, you’ll find the annotated script pages, personal notes, visual storyboards, and various audio recordings from the Oscar-nominated director.

As a huge film enthusiast and a director myself, I can’t even begin to fathom how my fellow directors create their masterpieces. Each of us follows our unique path in movie-making. This Archives project presents an incredible chance for me to share my passion and the intricacies of my process with others.

Mann’s filmography includes such titles as Manhunter (1986), The Last of the Mohicans (1992), Heat (1995), The Insider (1999), Ali (2001), Collateral (2004), Miami Vice (2006) and Public Enemies (2009).

Edward Saxon, a film producer known for works like “The Silence of the Lambs” and a Cinematic Arts professor at USC, expressed his thoughts on the archives in a statement: “These archives are an exceptional, indispensable resource for film and filmmaking research. They’re brilliant and engaging, offering valuable insights into a filmmaker’s creative process – getting as close as possible without being physically present on set. Not just informative but also enjoyable.”

In his critique for The Hollywood Reporter, chief film critic David Rooney expressed that “Ferrari” is just as unmistakably masculine as anything Mann has produced, and it’s not only intense but most notably so during its thrilling engine revs and racing sequences around the track or along open roads.
