Resident Evil 7 hits a surprising low with its latest release

As a long-time fan of the Resident Evil series, I can’t help but feel disappointed and bewildered by the poor performance of Resident Evil 7‘s mobile release. Having experienced the game in its full glory on PC and console, it’s disheartening to see Capcom attempt to bring this masterpiece to iOS with such lackluster results.

Recently, Resident Evil has been making the right moves. Following the excessive cinematic experience of Resident Evil 6 in 2012, Capcom took a break and returned strongly with the gory revival of Resident Evil 7 in 2017.

RE7 is widely recognized as one of the most terrifying video games ever made, and playing it in VR takes courage beyond the ordinary. The classic horror style persisted in 2021’s Resident Evil Village, while the remake of Resident Evil 4 heightened the fear factor last year.

Although RE4 is often hailed as the top game in the Resident Evil series, RES7 offers a chilling experience that’s worth acknowledging. Initially launched for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, it surprisingly came out in Japan for Nintendo Switch later on. Its recent appearance on another platform is quite unexpected.

Recently, Resident Evil 7 became available on iOS, and given that mobile gaming isn’t our usual preference, this release appears to have impacted the game’s sales negatively. According to Appmagic, as reported by MobileGamer.biz, approximately 83,000 individuals have downloaded RE7 since July 2. However, fewer than 2,000 of these users have actually purchased the game, representing only around 2.4% of the total number of downloads. In simpler terms, while many people have downloaded Resident Evil 7 on their iPhones or iPads, only a small percentage have opted to pay for the full version.

As a long-time fan of Capcom and Resident Evil series, I have to admit I was quite excited when I heard about the release of Resident Evil 7 on mobile. I eagerly downloaded it and started playing, hoping to enjoy the same thrilling experience as on console. However, after seeing the latest financial reports, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed.

Players appear unfazed by this revelation. The thrill of the Baker Ranch horror game lies in plunging into darkness and exploring decaying crawl spaces. However, this experience loses some of its appeal when you’re playing during your morning commute, sharing a confined space with others.

When the data was posted on the r/Horror Reddit community, it became evident that not many people there are fans of this type of portable game. One unhappy player exclaimed, “Who in their right mind would want to play a game like that on a mobile device?” Another made a jesting comment, “Even Resident Evil 7 downgraded for iOS didn’t sell – unbelievable!” A third individual expressed, “To be honest, I don’t know anyone eagerly waiting to play horror games on their mobiles.”

Although Capcom has been trying to expand into mobile gaming with RE7, its sales figures suggest that they might be attempting to sell a game that no longer has commercial life. Apple has boasted about the capabilities of the iPhone 15 Pro Max for running AAA games, but the reception towards the RE4 remake and Village has been underwhelming. Could the release of RE7 on iOS add to Capcom’s struggle in this new market?
