As a seasoned investigative journalist with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from political scandals to corporate cover-ups. But nothing quite prepared me for the enigmatic world of conspiracy theories and their devoted followers. It was during one of these forays into the depths of the internet that I stumbled upon Opération Lune, or “Dark Side of the Moon,” as it’s known in some circles.

Recently, the romantic comedy “Fly Me to the Moon” has been released in theaters, bringing back discussions about the authenticity of the moon landing. Set in the 1960s during the Space Race between the US and the Soviet Union, this film tells the story of Cole Davis (Channing Tatum), the NASA director overseeing Apollo 11’s launch, and Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson), a marketing expert brought in to improve NASA’s public image. As the race to reach the moon heats up, Jones secretly plans a fake moon landing as an alternate option if the actual mission fails. Although it is a work of fiction, this movie sheds light on popular moon landing conspiracies, including Stanley Kubrick’s rumored role in staging the US moon landing 55 years ago.

For people not in the know, there’s an entertaining mockumentary called “Opération Lune” or “Dark Side of the Moon” that sheds light on the supposed Kubrick Moon landing hoax. This French production aired first on Arte, a European art and culture TV network, back in 2002. The film features conversations with government personnel, Kubrick’s relatives, and paid actors who claim the Apollo 11 Moon landing footage was fabricated. Despite this assertion, they still believe that the Moon landing occurred, but the televised evidence didn’t meet expectations, so the CIA and Stanley Kubrick produced the images and videos in a studio instead.

What Does Stanley Kubrick Have to Do With the Moon Landing in Opération Lune?

Starting off, the mockumentary shares that Kubrick’s collaboration with NASA started when he obtained one of NASA’s exclusive and hidden Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f/0.7 lenses for one of his movies following a special permission. In return, Kubrick eventually consented to film a staged Moon landing in the future, although initially hesitant. Contrary to the report, NASA didn’t lend Kubrick any equipment. Instead, he bought the surplus lenses that weren’t needed by NASA. These lenses were produced specifically for the Apollo program and ten were manufactured. While it’s accurate that Kubrick owned three of these lenses, he acquired them afterwards and had to extensively modify them to fit his 35mm camera.

The mockumentary goes on to reveal that NASA officials saw value in Kubrick’s 1968 film “2001: A Space Odyssey” as a means to generate public support for their lunar program. According to the mockumentary, Kubrick’s movie influenced the design of certain spacesuits and spacecraft in NASA’s projects, aiming for a more cinematic look that would appeal to the public. However, this backfired. In actuality, Kubrick had sought NASA’s advice for accuracy in his film production. Due to the coinciding timeline with the Space Race, Kubrick unwittingly became involved in the burgeoning conspiracies surrounding NASA’s missions.

A Space Odyssey.”

After the CIA’s clandestine operation, Nixon became increasingly anxious that the deception surrounding their controlled landing would be exposed. As a result, he made hasty choices to silence those connected to the project. It is alleged that a high-ranking individual is responsible for unveiling this hidden truth in the mockumentary. Tragically, this person passes away prior to finishing interviews with the documentarians.

There’s a Major Problem With Opération Lune

In a mockumentary like Opération Lune, it’s obvious that the production is intended as a joke. However, in the initial stages, it comes across as genuine. Though there are inconsistencies with details and timelines scattered throughout the film, it isn’t until the end that we learn it was intentionally fabricated. Consequently, this misinformation has been exploited by conspiracy theorists to support their beliefs that such events truly transpired.

In addition, the paid actors and Kubrick’s family took part in the production playfully, but the filmmakers manipulated genuine interviews of government officials to create an intriguing contrast with the documentary’s humorous, yet misleading statements. For those eager to explore the Kubrick Moon landing hoax theories, this mockumentary provides a clear and entertaining explanation. However, it may be too effective in doing so.
