As a long-time Star Wars fan, I’m excited about the potential addition of Darth Plagueis to The Acolyte. However, having followed the development of this series closely, I believe that his presence should not overshadow the growth and exploration of Osha, Mae, and Qimir’s stories.

The first season of “The Acolyte” in the Star Wars universe has concluded, leaving fans eagerly waiting for news from Disney and Lucasfilm about potential future seasons. Although no definitive plans have been announced, there are numerous storylines ripe for exploration. For instance, Osha has agreed to mentor Qimir, also known as “The Stranger,” who was unveiled as the former apprentice of Vernestra Rwohms. However, the most thrilling development for dedicated Star Wars followers was the long-anticipated appearance of Darth Plagueis in the episode titled “The Acolyte.”
After almost twenty years of being referenced in the official Star Wars storyline (keep in mind that the 2012 novel “Star Wars: Darth Plagueis” is part of the Legends collection), Plagueis made his physical appearance. It’s likely that if “The Acolyte” Season 2 comes to pass, he will significantly influence the storyline. I’m in favor of this development but am concerned that introducing the Sith Lord could overshadow more captivating plot elements.
Darth Plagueis Has Arrived
When I tried on Qimir’s helmet during our last encounter, it clung stubbornly to my head, refusing to come off unless the Sith intervened. Afterwards, Osha confided in me that she had seen a disturbing vision: Mae, her sister, was imagined to be murdering Sol without even using a weapon. With this revelation and the knowledge that Mae was on Brendok, Qimir and I quickly made our way there in her ship. As we prepared to depart, a cryptic figure watched us from the shadows of a nearby cave.
Though enshrouded in mystery, there’s no denying that he is Darth Plagueis, the early-introduced character in “Revenge of the Sith,” who held Master status over Sheev Palpatine, better known as Darth Sidious. In the concluding installment of the Prequel Trilogy, Palpatine disclosed to Anakin Skywalker that Plagueis had mastered the Dark Side of the Force to defy death and generate life. Sadly for Plagueis, however, he couldn’t save himself when Palpatine ended his life in his slumber.
As a long-time fan of Star Wars, I’ve always been intrigued by the lore and backstory of the Force-wielding sages and dark side practitioners that inhabit this galaxy far, far away. The latest addition to this rich tapestry is the enigmatic figure of Plagueis, whose influence on the events leading up to the Skywalker saga has recently come to light in both “The Rise of Skywalker” novelization and the Disney+ series “The Acolyte.”
Plagueis’ Inclusion Shouldn’t Overshadow Qimir And Osha’s Stories
With “The Acolyte” being set 100 years prior to “The Phantom Menace,” I had always assumed that this series might introduce Darth Plagueis. My suspicions intensified when it was disclosed that Osha and Mae were brought into existence by the Nightsisters through manipulating the Force with a “vergence.” This power could very well be the same as the one Plagueis utilized to create life. Additionally, Qimir openly identifying as Sith instead of merely a Dark Side practitioner further strengthens the possibility that he was trained by Plagueis.
If Plagueis is indeed Qui-Gon Jinn’s master, it would be beneficial to have him in “The Acolyte” series for us to understand how Qui-Gon gained his power. However, I don’t want this “Star Wars” spin-off to solely focus on Darth Plagueis and lose sight of the main characters – Osha, Mae, Qui-Gon, and Venestra. While we’ll gain insights into Plagueis’ personality and backstory, it should not overshadow these four leading characters from Season 1.
As a longtime fan of the Star Wars franchise, I’ve seen my fair share of passionate debates and disagreements among fans. But recently, I’ve noticed something new and disheartening: review-bombing attempts against certain Star Wars projects, most notably The Acolyte.
Certainly!
One major advantage of “The Acolyte” in the Star Wars franchise is its self-sufficiency. While shows like “The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka” offer rich background due to their connections to earlier series such as “The Clone Wars” and “Rebels,” “The Acolyte” allows viewers to fully engage with the storyline if they have only seen the Star Wars films in sequence. Reading High Republic literature can add depth, but it’s not essential for understanding the show. I’m concerned that introducing Palpatine (Plageuis) might lead us back into the intricate lore and potentially detract from this series’ straightforward approach.
To put it simply, Plagueis should serve as a supporting character in Qimir’s backstory instead of being the main focus of “The Acolyte.” We aim to explore Qimir’s past under Vernestra Rhoom’s guidance, painting a picture of who he was as a Jedi. What events led Vernestra to believe him dead? How did they initially meet Plagueis? Moreover, considering that Venestra has learned Qimir is alive and will share this revelation with Yoda, what transpires when these two encounter each other once more?
Darth Plagueis plays a significant role in the story, but he doesn’t have to be the focus. Osha and Mae are the primary characters of “The Acolyte,” even if we need to delve deeper into Osha’s past. After killing Sol and extracting the crystal from his lightsaber, Osha has embarked on a dark path. It’s uncertain whether Mae will remain in the story now that her memories have been wiped, but for the plot to progress, we should prioritize Osha’s journey rather than Darth Plagueis’ schemes. We’re already aware that he’ll make it through the series, so his presence is mainly to set up Qimir’s eventual demise or renunciation of the Dark Side, leading to Palpatine becoming Plagueis’ apprentice.
