This is Spinal Tap Sequel Gets Release Update from Rob Reiner

As a die-hard fan of Rob Reiner and Spinal Tap, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that we were finally getting a sequel to one of the most iconic mockumentaries in film history! The original “This Is Spinal Tap” (1984) was a groundbreaking work of art that perfectly satirized the world of rock and roll. And now, after all these years, Rob Reiner has graced us with an update on the long-awaited sequel.

In an exciting turn of events, Rob Reiner, director of the iconic mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap” from 1984, shares thrilling news about the upcoming sequel to this cult classic. The original film chronicled Marty DiBergi’s (Reiner) experience as a fake documentary maker following British heavy metal band Spinal Tap on their American comeback tour, capturing both their triumphs and tribulations during unstable performances.

Rob Reiner recently chatted with Deadline about the upcoming sequel he’s been working on. This year, Reiner earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special for his new production “Albert Brooks: Living with Laughter” – a deep dive into comedian Albert Brooks’ life and career. In a playful mood, Reiner quipped that the journey to creating an Emmy-nominated documentary began with his phony one from the 1980s.

“This is completely unexpected of me. I’ve hardly ever created a genuine documentary before, with the exception being the humorous one – Spinal Tap. It’s amusing to receive such acknowledgment for it.”

The making of the unnamed Spinal Tap follow-up is in full swing at present. So far, scant information regarding this project has been disclosed. However, Reiner shared some light on when we can anticipate the return of Spinal Tap for their second tour. According to him:

Things are progressing well. Our initial screening for loved ones is likely to take place in August. In September, we plan to present the film to distributors. We’re aiming for a release date somewhere between late spring and early summer of next year.

In the upcoming sequel of Spinal Tap, the legendary band members, David St. Hubbins (played by Michael McKean), Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), will not be performing solo. They will be joined by exceptional musical guests. These guests are expected to contribute to the band’s highly anticipated comeback, possibly sharing insights on Spinal Tap’s tumultuous past as a music group. During an interview, Reiner hinted at some of these guests, mentioning:

We gathered everyone and surprised them with the addition of a few special guests. Among them are Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks. It’s going to be an enjoyable experience.

Based on scant information, it appears that “Spinal Tap II” will center around the band coming together for yet another obligated performance, with DiBergi set to record their reunion. However, the band is less than thrilled about his portrayal of them in the previous film. According to Reiner, who spoke with TotalFilm (as reported by MetalHammer), there have been proposals for a “Spinal Tap” sequel for years, but none of the suggestions were satisfactory. The director expressed:

“We’d always say, ‘No, no’. Then we had an idea, and we said, ‘Well, maybe we could do it…’”

The director has started merging his true role behind the camera with his on-screen character Marty DiBergi, a fictitious filmmaker. Reflecting on the initial production, Reiner quipped:

In our initial project, no one gave us instructions or guidelines. That’s what concerns me about the upcoming one since we brought Marty DiBergi back on board to direct – there’s a risk he might ruin it!

The anticipated sequel to “This Is Spinal Tap,” titled “This Is Spinal Tap II,” is predicted to come out around early 2025. On the other hand, you can currently watch the original “This Is Spinal Tap” on Apple TV+.
