Guilty Gear Strive Gives Fans the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Crossover They Wanted

As a long-time fan of both Guilty Gear and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I heard that Lucy, the beloved protagonist from Edgerunners, would be joining the roster of Guilty Gear Strive as a guest character. This announcement came as a complete shock to me and many other fans since we had assumed that CD Projekt Red would keep their characters exclusive to their own games.

At EVO 2023, Guilty Gear Strive revealed the lineup for its fourth DLC season, which includes both returning characters and fresh faces. One of these newcomers is an unexpected surprise: Lucy, a character hailing from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, will join the roster in 2025.

Fans were taken aback by Lucy’s unexpected involvement as they assumed Edgerunners would be exclusive to Cyberpunk games produced by CD Projekt Red. However, this revelation suggests that these characters could potentially appear in other gaming collaborations, subject to CDPR’s approval.

Experiencing Lucy, a character from Edgerunners, show up in Guilty Gear Strive feels like a bizarre yet fitting occurrence for some viewers. This is because the distinctly anime-styled cast of Edgerunners seems less suitable for Cyberpunk 2077’s gritty, realistic world. Instead, Lucy’s inclusion in Guilty Gear aligns better with its vibrant and stylized art direction. Moreover, this crossover offers fans the chance to witness even more of Lucy’s impressive moves that left them captivated during her time in Edgerunners.

CD Projekt Red has a history of incorporating its characters into fighting games. For instance, Geralt from The Witcher made an appearance in Soulcalibur 6. Given that both The Witcher and Soulcalibur are set in medieval-esque timelines, Geralt seamlessly fits into the Soulcalibur universe. Likewise, Lucy from Edgerunners can be a suitable addition to Strive because Edgerunners is set in a future with cybernetics, while the Guilty Gear series features a universe rich in cybernetics and magic. So, CD Projekt Red’s characters often mesh well into these fighting game universes due to their shared themes.

There’s been much excitement among fans for more Edgerunners content in video game format. Consequently, there were numerous speculations that the anime would play a larger role in Cyberpunk 2077. Regrettably, this didn’t materialize, but we did get brief appearances from Falco through voice acting and David being recognized as a legendary figure within the game.

So far, Guilty Gear Strive has avoided including guest characters, instead focusing on its main cast and streamlined battle system. It’s quite surprising that this is their first foray into guest characters, as most fighting games have already incorporated them. In fact, Street Fighter 6 is set to introduce Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui from King of Fighters.
