BBC Chief Apologizes After ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ Bullying Claims: “The Line Should Never Be Crossed”

As a long-time fan of Strictly Come Dancing and having followed the recent controversy surrounding two former professional dancers, I can’t help but feel dismayed and disappointed by the events that have unfolded. The show has always been a source of joy and entertainment in my life, bringing together people from all walks of life to celebrate dance and friendship. However, the allegations of “gross misconduct” against Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima have tarnished the reputation of the show and left many of us, including past participants like Zara McDermott and Amanda Abbington, feeling distressed and let down.

The BBC’s chief executive has expressed regret after accusations of serious misbehavior surfaced against two ex-dancers on “Strictly Come Dancing.”

As a dedicated gamer and avid follower of British TV, I can’t help but be passionate about the popular reality dance competition that shares similarities with “Dancing with the Stars” in the US. Yet, last week left me feeling dismayed as our cherished show made headlines for less-than-ideal reasons. The broadcaster felt compelled to introduce new welfare measures following concerns raised regarding two of its dancers.

Fan-favorite dancers Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima won’t be in this year’s series due to the channel bringing on two new welfare producers, adding to other safety measures already in place.

As a huge fan of “Strictly Come Dancing,” I was taken aback when I recently heard about the troubling experiences some past contestants had with professional dancer Giovanni Pernice. Last year, after being partnered with him on the show, reality star Zara McDermott shared that watching footage of their time together was “incredibly distressing” for her. And just this October, “Sherlock” actress Amanda Abbington spoke out about her own unpleasant encounters with Pernice, accusing him of being “abusive, cruel,” and “mean.” These allegations are truly disheartening to hear as a devoted viewer of the show.

I’m truly sorry for my past actions and regret deeply the impact they may have had. My fierce drive to succeed might have clouded my judgment when it came to my training regimen. As a fan, I can understand the 30-year-old Italian, Di Prima, feeling the heat of competition. On the other hand, Pernice stands firm in his innocence and vows to return, assuring his supporters: “I will be back.”

When the BBC published its annual report last Tuesday, Tim Davies, the organization’s chief, expressed his regret over negative experiences on “Strictly.” He acknowledged the need for reflection and apologized for any dissatisfaction caused. Upon learning about the allegations, he shared his disappointment.

As a fan, I’d put it this way: “I understand if someone feels something wasn’t right or wants to share their experience with us. Please don’t hesitate to bring it up, as we value your feedback and take it seriously. We’ll listen carefully and respond appropriately. It goes without saying that we prioritize having the proper procedures and systems in place for the show. We regularly review and update them to ensure they work for everyone.”

The BBC executive, without mentioning any particular rivals or staff members, discussed the existence of “healthy competition, dedication, and eagerness for success” that coexists with the enjoyable aspect of a program like “Strictly.” According to Davie, this is an inherent aspect of the show. However, there are boundaries, and inappropriate conduct will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

McDermott, who gained popularity first on ITV2’s “Love Island” and later on E4’s “Made in Chelsea,” shared her apprehensions about discussing her experience on “Strictly Come Dancing.” She expressed fear of negative public reaction and potential victim shaming. However, after having heartfelt discussions with people close to her, she mustered the courage to confront these anxieties. When approached by the BBC, she openly shared her story from her time on the show.

During rehearsals, there are now new roles added to the production team. We have a celebrity welfare producer and a professional dancer welfare producer to ensure everyone’s well-being. Plus, the team and crew are getting extra training to up their game!
