As a long-time Marvel fan and avid reader of comic books, I cannot hide my disappointment that Mephisto didn’t make an appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The prospect of seeing this iconic villain brought to life on the big screen has been a dream of mine for decades. Ever since his debut in 1968’s “Silver Surfer #3,” Mephisto has captivated me with his intricate storylines and fascinating character development.

Deadpool & Wolverine is dipping into the well of Marvel villains to bring out Cassandra Nova as its main antagonist, but according to Ryan Reynolds the movie could have featured a villain that fans have expected to see in every project of the last several years. From early on in Phase 4 – and even slightly before that, while Thanos was still looming large over the franchise – fans have taken every opportunity to try and wish Mephisto into the MCU. It seems that could have happened in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Mephisto functions as Marvel Comics’ depiction of the Devil and has been a formidable adversary since his introduction in “Silver Surfer #3” in 1968. He has clashed with notable heroes such as Ghost Rider, Silver Surfer, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Doctor Doom, and numerous others. On the big screen, he made a significant cameo in Nicolas Cage’s “Ghost Rider,” portrayed by Peter Fonda, and resurfaced in the sequel with Ciaran Hinds taking on the role.

It appears that fans eagerly anticipating the arrival of a certain character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe had reason to be hopeful, as plans were underway to introduce him in Ryan Reynolds’ most recent Deadpool film. During an interview with Collider, Reynolds and director Shawn Levy discussed the narrowly missed opportunity for Mephisto to make his MCU debut. After Reynolds confirmed that they had considered adding the demon to the plot, Levy elaborated:

We experienced numerous nearly-finished versions of this tale before finding the winning one. To be honest, it was Hugh’s controversial phone call that initially steered us in this direction, but later, the concept of Cassandra Nova as Charles’ sibling emerged. This idea adds an intriguing dynamic and captivates Jackman with Cassandra’s connection to Professor X.

In the end, introducing Mephisto into Deadpool’s storyline on screen might have delighted some fans. However, adding this powerful Marvel Comics character to Deadpool’s already complex universe could potentially lead to the same problem as when Reed Richards was introduced in “Multiverse of Madness.” With his immense power and often antagonistic role, Mephisto is a strong contender for becoming the villain in his own storyline. The challenge lies in finding an appropriate place for him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As a passionate gamer and avid Marvel fan, I’m thrilled about the ongoing Multiverse Saga, which still has plenty of time left to unfold over the next few years. Kevin Feige has also hinted at what comes next: the Mutant Saga. It’s reassuring to see that Marvel’s future is less congested than it was a few years back with fewer movies and TV shows in the pipeline. However, the various branches of this expansive franchise might never truly intersect.

As a big fan, I can understand why Mephisto is such an intriguing villain, but I also recognize that he has some fierce competition. With Galactus set to make his entrance in Fantastic Four and the unresolved Kang issues, not to mention Doctor Doom waiting in the wings, it seems wise for Deadpool and Wolverine to move on from Mephisto for now. Marvel Studios might do well to hold off on introducing him until they can find a storyline that truly brings out his depth and complexity.
