Above all, they evoke a deep sense of the horrors of war within viewers. Amongst the recent military-themed movies, which ones truly excel in these aspects?
10 Escape from Germany

Initially, some doubt his words, but within just a fortnight, Heber J. Grant’s grim prediction comes alarmingly true.

In war movies where characters focus on escaping the mayhem instead of putting it out, there’s an alluring charm. Director T.C. Christensen carefully balances screen time among many characters in this portrayal.

When I played the game titled “Land of Bad“, I was initially taken aback by its cheesy name. But boy, was I wrong! This action-packed adventure, featuring an all-star cast including Russel Crowe and both Hemsworth brothers (Liam and Luke), took me on a heart-pumping journey. My Delta Force team and I were attempting to save a CIA agent in an undisclosed Asian location when we were suddenly ambushed. As bullets flew and chaos ensued, I gritted my teeth and focused on my role as the drone pilot, “Reaper” Grimm. Working tirelessly behind the scenes, I provided crucial support, coordinating airstrikes and relaying vital intel to help my team make it out alive. The suspense was palpable and every second counted.
Rich Banter and Gung-ho Protagonists
In this film, the CIA is casually labeled as “Alphabet soup,” a humorous term used by a character. Another character makes a quip about identifying vegans, stating, “You’ll know someone’s a vegan when they tell you.” The excitement of the action unfolds not only on the battlefield but also off it, with everyone determined to eliminate the opposition.
In the jungle, Sgt. Kinney, portrayed by Liam Hemsworth, shows remarkable determination as he skillfully avoids enemy pursuits. Meanwhile, Reaper, played by Crowe, maintains his unwavering concentration at the drone command center despite his colleagues taking it easy.
In a memorable moment, Crowe’s character frantically discards produce at the grocery store checkout and rushes back to the base upon hearing that Kinney is in danger. However, no one responds to his calls for help among his colleagues. After witnessing this unfold on screen, viewers will be left feeling compelled to appreciate the importance of their own responsibilities.

7 One Life
Earlier in the year, the movie “One Life,” featuring Anthony Hopkins in the cast, stands out as a must-watch for Holocaust films. In this production, we follow London businessman Nicholas Winton, who travels to Czechoslovakia for work. Shocked by the deplorable living conditions of Jewish refugees escaping from Germany and Austria, he momentarily pauses from his high-stakes stockbroker duties and decides to save the children by transporting them to England.
Fighting Bureaucracy
From a gamer’s perspective, in the game “One Life,” I find myself facing challenges not so much on the battlefield, but rather battling against red tape and bureaucracy. My character, Winton, is determined to get these children to safety by transporting them illegally and placing them with suitable foster families. However, when I’m met with resistance from a government official who insists “That takes time!”, I can’t afford that luxury. The enemy is closing in, so I retort with an understandable response: “We don’t have time!”
Throughout the movie, his facial expressions shift between optimism and sadness as he attempts to rescue 669 children via ten trains. However, the ninth train is intercepted by the Nazis, leaving him riddled with regret over the lives he couldn’t save rather than feeling grateful for those who were successfully transported.

6 The Zone of Interest
As a fan, I’d describe it this way: In “The Zone of Interest,” I was drawn into the chilling portrayal of the seemingly idyllic lives of high-ranking Nazis during World War II. I was introduced to Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), the commandant of Auschwitz concentration camp, who lived in a picturesque paradise with his family right next to the camp. Surrounded by a sparkling river, an immaculate yard, and lush mountains, it was hard to believe the horrors that were taking place just a stone’s throw away.
Within the confines of the camp, the interior remains hidden from view. At times, chilling screams echo through the air. The sight of smoke rising from cremated bodies is a grim reminder of the atrocities taking place. Yet, Höss’ children carry on with their daily lives, blissfully unaware of the horrors that lie just beyond their doorstep.
The Power of Sound
A subtle fear pervades the movie as the camp’s haunting noises – cries, gunshots, and train horns – frequently interrupt the scenes. Despite this, the Höss family carries on with their routine activities, arranging picnics and celebrations. Even Rudolf’s wife justifies the murder of Jews as usual and necessary. To the nanny, she casually remarks, “I could scatter your remains over the fields of Babice,” expressing her acceptance after observing any unease.
Instead of just focusing on the audio, the film employs extended takes capturing the beauty of German life, in stark contrast to the suffering of other humans beyond the boundary. The visuals are equally impressive, filled with images of blooming flowers, lush greenery, sparkling water, and idyllic scenes that seem like a perfect paradise, yet exist uncomfortably near to hell.

In an alternate reality, the United States of America is referred to as the Disunited States of America due to the deep-rooted divisions within the country. A tyrannical ruler serving his third term as president has instigated widespread unrest through his polarizing actions. Consequently, secessionist uprisings have begun to spread across the nation. Amidst this turmoil, a team of intrepid journalists embarks on a dangerous journey from New York to Washington, D.C., with the hope of securing an audience with the president before the rebellious forces overthrow him.
An Ugly Version of America
As a devoted fan, I must admit that if you’re looking for an action-packed American Civil War movie filled with battle scenes and heroic soldiers, “Civil War” may not be the film for you. Instead, this thought-provoking production delves deep into the political landscape and media coverage of war. Yes, there are still moments of intense gunfire and explosions, but the focus is primarily on the consequences of neglecting our democratic values. Essentially, “Civil War” serves as a powerful reminder of the potential perils that lie ahead should we ever take our democracy for granted.
Does the film offer insights into contemporary American politics through its narrative? This is open to interpretation, yet some signs include the portrayal of a president holed up in a fortified White House, pledging to quell a revolution and proclaiming it as “the most historic victory ever.” Such dialogue bears an uncanny resemblance to certain political figures.

Every evening, Julien secretly taught Sara all that he had learned at school. It wasn’t long before feelings developed between them.
Romance and Compassion
“White Bird” movie, similar to its source teenage novel, keeps things straightforward. It focuses on love and war themes, making it a must-watch for romance and World War II film enthusiasts. The film avoids delving intricately into Nazi machinery, which adds to its appeal for wider audiences. Furthermore, this movie serves as an excellent choice for parents aiming to instill values of kindness, compassion, and unity in their children.
