Pixar’s ‘Inside Out 2’ Becomes Top Animated Film of All Time at Global Box Office

As a devoted gamer and animation enthusiast with a soft spot for Pixar films, I can hardly contain my excitement as I witness the incredible feat of “Inside Out 2” surpassing Disney’s “Frozen II” to become the top-grossing animated film of all time at the worldwide box office. The nostalgic part of me is thrilled, knowing that Riley and her emotions have touched the hearts of audiences around the world, leaving an indelible mark on cinema history.

Ecstatic. Incredible. Gleeful. Overjoyed. Take your pick.

Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” has outperformed Disney’s “Frozen II” as the highest-grossing Hollywood animated film of all time at the global box office, earning a total of approximately $1.462 billion (unadjusted for inflation) after Tuesday’s takings. The film has made $601 million in domestic sales and an additional $861.8 million from international markets.

In the year 2019, Disney Animation’s “Frozen II” earned a total of $1.451 billion. Currently, it ranks as the second highest-grossing animated film of all time, trailing behind Illumination and Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” with a revenue of $1.361 billion. Following closely are the first “Frozen” movie with $1.274 billion, Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” with $1.242 billion, and Illumination’s “Minions” with $1.157 billion. Additionally, “Toy Story 4,” “Despicable Me 3,” and “Finding Dory” rounded off the top ten with earnings of $1.072 billion, $1.032 billion, and $1 billion respectively.

As a movie enthusiast who grew up watching animated films, I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised to learn that “Inside Out 2” has managed to outshine Warner Bros.’ blockbuster “Barbie” ($1.446 billion) at the box office on Monday. With its release in 2023, this sequel has become a significant addition to my collection of favorite movies, and it’s quite an achievement for it to secure the thirteenth spot on the list of all-time grossing films, animated or otherwise.

The unexpected success of “Inside Out 2” at the summer box office can be considered as a pleasant surprise, given Pixar’s recent challenges and the shifting trends in the animated family film market. With families increasingly opting for streaming platforms over cinemas for animated content, Pixar faced additional hurdles when three of its films were released directly on streaming under the previous Disney CEO’s tenure. However, “Inside Out 2” proved to be a welcome relief for the esteemed animation studio.

Only one achievement remains: “Inside Out 2” is soon expected to surpass “Finding Dory” ($608 million) in domestic box office revenue, making them the sole animated films to reach over $600 million in North America.

More recently, the total earnings of “Inside Out 2” surpassed those of “Incredibles 2” ($1.242 billion) at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing Pixar film to date, without considering inflation.

The second installment of “Inside Out,” named “Inside Out 2,” has not been released in Japan yet, where the weather is predicted to be sunny. In South Korea alone, it has generated over $55 million in revenue, an impressive amount that Disney is optimistic will translate to success in Japan. Across Asia, Europe, and North America, audiences of all ages, including families, teenagers, and younger women, are flocking to see the film. These demographics grew up with the original “Inside Out,” which was released in 2015.

The sequel is also doing historic business across Latin America and Europe.

In the sequel, directed by Kelsey Mann, Riley’s teenage years bring new emotions into the mix. These include Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust are unsure how to react to this fresh wave of feelings.

The film is sparking widespread conversation about the emotional transformations that come with puberty, and is strongly endorsed by numerous educators and psychologists as an educational tool.

Amy Poehler — who plays Joy — leads the ensemble voice cast. The roster of stars includes Maya Hawke, Kensington Tallman, Liza Lapira, Tony Hale, Lewis Black, Phyllis Smith, Ayo Edebiri, Lilimar, Grace Lu, Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan, Paul Walter Hauser and Yvette Nicole Brown.

As a movie enthusiast who grew up with Disney and Pixar animations, I’ve been thoroughly impressed by the recent success of “Inside Out 2.” Having seen countless animated films throughout my life, I can confidently say that this sequel stands out from the crowd. Its record-breaking performance at the box office, surpassing $1 billion globally in just 19 days, is a testament to its appeal and high-quality storytelling.

In 2015, Inside Out topped out at $858.8 million globally.
