Tia Mowry Shares Emotional Message After Sonya Massey Police Shooting: “When Is Enough, Enough?”

As a fan and someone who deeply cares about social justice issues, I am deeply saddened and outraged by the senseless shooting of Sonya Massey at her own home by a sheriff’s deputy. Tia Mowry’s heartfelt plea on Instagram resonated with me deeply as she expressed the fear and anxiety that many Black parents, including myself, feel for our loved ones in this society.

Tia Mowry is urging authorities to take necessary steps following the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey, a Black woman in Illinois, who was tragically killed in her own residence when a sheriff’s deputy responded to her 911 call for assistance due to a suspected intruder.

In an Instagram post on Tuesday, the actress from “Family Reunion” expressed her deep sympathy, her voice trembling with emotion. “I’m truly sorry for the lack of glamour in this video,” she began. Yet, she had been deeply moved by a recent video of Sonya that she had just watched. “My heart goes out to Sonya’s family,” she continued. Seeing someone’s life being taken away so brutally was an unbearable sight for her. “I can barely keep it together right now,” she admitted, “It’s just so terrible, so disgusting. When will this senseless violence end?”

Mowry additionally encouraged individuals with significant social media reach to utilize their influence and share their perspectives on police brutality.

She joined the conversation about influencers and spoke up, sharing her concerns as a mother. Particularly for her 13-year-old son Cree. As someone deeply invested in my community and people, I feel an immense responsibility. With his tall stature and Black identity, I’m filled with apprehension. When will this end? How much longer must we endure these conversations about safety and caution?

Footage from a body camera worn by an Illinois sheriff deputy, obtained by ABC News this week, shows the moment Massey was shot in the face on July 6. Deputy Sean Grayson, who is now terminated from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, is the officer responsible for the shooting. Grayson, a white man, has been accused of three counts of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct in relation to this incident. He has entered a plea of not guilty.

At around 12:50 a.m., Grayson and an unidentified deputy were dispatched to Massey’s residence by the sheriff’s office, following reports of a suspected intruder. Later on, according to court records, ABC News claimed that Grayson opened fire on Massey after she was shouted at aggressively by the deputy to drop a pot of boiling water.

I was surprised to find out that Grayson turned on his body-cam after the shooting occurred, according to documents. In contrast, the second deputy had already switched on his cam as soon as he arrived at the scene.

Mowry expressed her concerns over Massey’s death in company with other prominent figures such as Solange Knowles, Cardi B, President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris.

I was deeply saddened to learn about the tragic death of Sonya at the hands of a law enforcement officer. As a concerned citizen, I am reminded once again that Black Americans all too often live in fear for their safety, a concern that many of us do not share. The loss of Sonya’s life is senseless and unjust. My heart goes out to her family, especially her children, as they try to cope with this devastating loss during an already difficult time. Jill and I join the rest of the country in mourning for Sonya and extending our prayers to her loved ones and community. Justice must be served for Sonya and her family.
