God of War fans desperate for remake to celebrate 20th anniversary

As a long-time gamer with fond memories of my early gaming days, I can’t help but get excited at the prospect of a God of War remake. The original God of War released in 2005, and while the game holds a special place in my heart, the graphics and gameplay mechanics feel outdated compared to modern titles.

It feels like it’s been a long time since Kratos wielded his Blades of Chaos for the first time. Though God of War is now synonymous with the bearded hero from the 2018 reboot, plenty of us are yearning to return to the beginning and re-experience the original journey of the young Kratos.

In more current terms, modern game revivals are nothing unusual; witness the successes of Resident Evil and The Last of Us, which emerged relatively recently. The Last of Us debuted in 2013 and has since undergone an update, leaving God of War (released in 2005) ripe for a modern makeover.

God of War fans hyped about potential remake

It’s uncertain if this announcement will be made towards the end of this year or at the beginning of next year, just prior to the 20-year anniversary. (or)

The thought of returning to the seared lands of Ancient Greece through X, @TCMFGames suggested, may not be original, but there could be a remake of the classic God of War game emerging in 2025. Given that it will be twenty years since its initial launch, this seems like an ideal moment to capitalize on Kratos’ enduring legacy.

In reaction to the proposal, a backer expressed his enthusiasm by suggesting, “They should expand upon the narrative of the initial game and connect it more closely to other Greek mythology titles in the series.” Another fan was even more excited, proposing, “If they were to create a new version using the God of War: Ragnarok engine with a richly developed storyline (similar to the Final Fantasy VII remake), I would be utterly thrilled! The original trilogy is exceptional but feels outdated.”

According to XboxEra’s Nick Baker, there have been rumors of possible remasters for the first three games in the series. Baker, who has a track record of sharing industry news, mentioned this possibility without specifying if each game would be remastered separately or as part of a bundle. Despite some uncertainty regarding the credibility of his leaks, he is well-connected and often provides accurate information.

As a big fan of Sony Santa Monica and the God of War series, I can’t help but notice the recent success Capcom has experienced since releasing the highly acclaimed Resident Evil 2 remake in 2019. This got me thinking – maybe Sony Santa Monica could follow suit and give the first three God of War games a fresh makeover. With the iconic status these games hold, I believe there is plenty of material to justify individual remakes, potentially leading to similar chart-topping success.

As someone who has spent countless hours playing the God of War series since its inception, I can’t help but get excited at the prospect of a full remake of the original game. While God of War III already received a beautiful remaster for the PS4, I can’t help but feel that the first installment deserves the same treatment.

There’s much excitement about what lies ahead for the franchise after God of War Ragnarok. As fans speculate which mythology will be explored next, a remake or remakes of the earlier games could provide an enjoyable bridge until we reach that point. And let’s not forget, having Terrence C. Carson reprise his role as the Voice of the Ghost of Sparta would be a welcome addition.
