I had a conversation with actor Brett Gelman during the premiere of his latest production, “Lady in the Lake,” which is currently available on Apple TV+. In this series, Natalie Portman stars and Alma Har’el serves as the creator. The story is adapted from Laura Lippmann’s renowned novel and focuses on the complex dynamics of 1960s Baltimore, specifically exploring the Jewish and Black communities amid rising tensions when a young girl disappears in the initial episode. Gelman portrays the devoted Jewish husband of Portman’s character, unwavering in his faith even if it puts a strain on his relationships at times.

Gelman shared his strong connection to the show’s Jewish theme with MovieWeb, reflecting on its intricate portrayal of the American Jewish experience. He explained, “This aspect of the project really highlights the intricacies and challenges faced by the Jewish community in the US. It doesn’t provide simple answers or take sides, but rather explores the complexities. Given our current climate, I believe it’s crucial that we can handle complexity and avoid forming hasty opinions, relying only on empathy.”

Gelman shared his thoughts on working on the show, “I identified with my character. I believe he’s a strongly ethical person. He finds himself in a complex situation, grappling with questionable aspects of his role and women’s roles. Additionally, when discussing the Jewish experience of assimilation, he mentioned the advantages and challenges that come with it for American Jews. This is an issue he takes seriously and keeps close to heart.”

On the importance of depicting Jewish people and culture, Gelman added:

“The Jewish identity is prominently explored in the show with intricate depth. I’m thankful for Alma Har’el’s portrayal of this complexity, as she does similarly with Black representation in the series. The interactions between these two communities are also intricately depicted.”

Gelman Wants to Keep Doing Drama and Comedy

He shared with us his enthusiasm for excelling in his work: “I truly enjoy creating wonderful projects. I’ve been fortunate enough in my career to collaborate with exceptional artists and work on remarkable content,” he expressed. “I’m an actor, yet I have a knack for humor… When you possess a great sense of humor like mine, there’s a risk of being labeled or pigeonholed. I’m not referring to the stereotype that some comedians face when they transition to drama. That’s not entirely applicable to my situation as I’ve consistently worked in both fields… Projects such as ‘Lemon’ and ‘Fleabag’ fall into this category.”

He added:

As a versatile actor with a rich background in both comedy and drama, I have always been drawn to roles that allow me to explore the full spectrum of human emotion. In my opinion, the films and shows that possess an abundance of dramatic elements are the most intriguing and rewarding to work on. These projects offer countless opportunities for character development and storytelling, which is why I’ve dedicated my career to mastering the art of hitting just the right tone.
