Prince Harry Reveals All in ITV Doc on Tabloid Lawsuits, Saying U.K. Press Is “Why I Won’t Bring Meghan Back”

As a dedicated gamer and follower of news, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the ongoing legal battles between Prince Harry and the British tabloids. Having grown up in the public eye myself, I can relate to the invasion of privacy and harassment that these public figures have experienced.

Prince Harry recently granted his first interview following his victory in the privacy lawsuit against a prominent U.K. tabloid. In this extended conversation, he discussed the persistent legal struggle and shared how the late Queen Elizabeth II’s spirit encourages him to carry on: “She is strongly urging me to see this through to the end.”

In ITV’s investigative documentary “Tabloids on Trial,” broadcasted in the U.K. on Thursday, Prince Harry of the Duke household, as well as other notable figures such as Hugh Grant, Paul Gascoigne (former England soccer star), and Gordon Brown (ex-Prime Minister), shared their experiences in seeking justice amidst the extensive phone-hacking scandal and subsequent court cases.

The prince claims that he was under scrutiny from journalists and investigators affiliated with Rupert Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers (NGN), specifically “The Sun” and the former “News of the World.” Grant was also implicated in NGN’s lawsuits. He disclosed this in a documentary, having been compelled to settle the illegal spying case due to escalating legal expenses. NGN maintains that no unlawful activities transpired.

In December, Judge Timothy Fancourt of London’s High Court made a ruling in favor of Prince Harry in a case involving phone hacking. The judge’s decision, which totaled 386 pages, stated that phone hacking at Mirror Group Newspapers had been widespread and longstanding, and that executives there had attempted to conceal the practice. Breaking with royal tradition, Harry became the first member of his family to testify in an open court hearing in over a century. Additionally, Harry has another ongoing case against British tabloid The Daily Mail regarding similar issues.

Harry expressed his determination to ensure fairness for all during an interview with Rebecca Barry from ITV. He described the current situation as David versus Goliath, where the underdogs are the claimants and the powerful adversary is a massive media conglomerate. Regarding his victory against MGN in December 2023, Harry acknowledged feeling validated, sharing that phone hacking had been a long-standing issue and that many shocking truths have recently emerged, unbeknownst to the British public.

Harry claims that his voicemails were illegally accessed and flight records were obtained unlawfully, in addition to other significant breaches of his privacy. He described the experience of being hounded by paparazzi as distressing, a feeling that continues to haunt him both then and now.

As a gamer, I can relate this situation to standing up for myself in a tough game. Just like the prince, I’ve had my share of conflicts with some players who spread false rumors about me. I understand that addressing these issues publicly may create tension within the gaming community, but I believe it’s essential for my well-being and the welfare of those close to me.

He firmly believed that only he was capable of handling the situation, as he went on to address the threats to his family’s security from the tabloid media. One reason for keeping his wife away from the country was this issue. Barry then inquired about Queen Elizabeth II’s stance on the matter. “We had numerous discussions before her passing,” he reminisced, “and she wholeheartedly endorsed it. She understood how important this was to me.” Now, he felt encouraged by her presence, urging him to see it through to the end.

The prince expressed a desire for his family’s backing as well, but he emphasized that his actions were driven by personal motivations. Any discussions about his family in the media have sparked harsh criticisms from journalists. He has made it known that this matter is of great importance to him and must be addressed. He also shared concerns that his mother, Princess Diana, may have fallen victim to phone hacking.

As a seasoned investigative journalist with decades of experience under my belt, I can tell you that Grant’s story is not an uncommon one. The feeling of violation and powerlessness when your personal information is stolen and disseminated to the public is something I’ve witnessed all too often.

I couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt as I reached an out-of-court settlement. After all, if I were truly innocent, why would I need to pay off someone so much just to avoid a trial? But according to my understanding, settling was the most viable option. If I had gone to court and emerged victorious, any reduction in the proposed damages would have left me responsible for both parties’ costs. And that amounted to a staggering 10 million pounds.

In 2012, the Leveson Inquiry, a public investigation into the phone hacking scandal, took place and brought Murdoch himself and former editor of “News of the World,” Piers Morgan, under oath for questioning. However, Barry reported that tabloids frequently attributed most of the misconduct to “rogue” reporters and insisted it wasn’t common practice. Yet, a former journalist from one of those papers shared with ITV News that phone hacking was almost routine in the industry. He described an instance where reporters posed as members of Bob Geldof’s team to obtain a hotel bill. They phoned every number on it to figure out who Geldof’s new love interest was.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve come across some intriguing rumors about this game company in a recent documentary. Allegations of a cover-up surfaced, such as the deletion of thousands of emails prior to 2004 from their servers. The company defends itself, claiming it was just a “routine system cleanup” and no wrongdoing occurred. I can only hope that the upcoming trial for this issue will begin as soon as next year.

The NGN representative has repeatedly denied any illegal actions, but a representative from MGN expressed satisfaction after the prince’s victory in his lawsuit: “We’re glad to have settled this dispute. It provides us with needed clarity to progress past old incidents and for which we’ve already apologized.”
