As a long-time gamer and Transformers fan, I was absolutely thrilled to be part of the electric atmosphere at Comic-Con as Paramount unveiled the cast and sneak peeks of their upcoming animated feature, “Transformers One.” The anticipation had been building for months, with glimpses of the work-in-progress version shown at Annecy International Animation Film Festival and a fan screening in Los Angeles.
At San Diego Comic-Con, Paramount made a grand start to the major studio showcases with an extravagant presentation of their upcoming animated project, “Transformers One.” They unveiled the main cast and some enticing sneak peeks.
As an avid gamer, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the new feature that the studio has been teasing for months. They even gave us a sneak peek during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June. And just a few days ago, some lucky fans got to attend an exclusive screening in Los Angeles. So, during this panel, I didn’t expect to hear any major news since we’ve already seen quite a bit of it.
Instead of just making up for the disappointing start with its storyline, the film truly shone through its engaging voice cast. Chris Hemsworth brought Orion Pax to life, transforming into the beloved Optimus Prime. Brian Tyree Henry gave depth to D-16, eventually unveiling the menacing Megatron. Lastly, Keegan-Michael Key breathed personality into B-127, bringing Bumblebee to life.
Three individuals joined director Josh Cooley and seasoned “Transformers” franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura on the stage.
As a gamer, I had everyone in stitches when I made Transformers sound effects and sang the iconic theme song aloud. Later on during the Q&A session, a lady addressed her question to Key and me, casually adding “And Chris, I suppose,” which earned plenty of good-natured banter towards the Australian star, turning it into a recurring joke throughout the event.
“Oh this is historic!” howled Key.
After all questions had been asked, moderator Anthony Breznican invited one more participant, a young boy, to join in. Delighted by this opportunity, the boy announced, “I’d like to ask not just one, but seven questions instead.”
Additionally, the attendees were further won over by distributing posters and holding a lottery for an authentic Matrix of Leadership prop signed by the actors.
As a kid, I used to play with these toys just like the actors did in that interview. And you know what? Those toys hold a special place in my heart, much like they do for those actors and the franchise community.
“Hemworth cherishes the nostalgia connected to it,” he expressed. “Those tales embodied concepts like justice, injustice, right and wrong, subtly teaching valuable lessons.”
Henry often found himself receiving villain figures from his parents, be it Transformers or not. He shared, “I’d always cast them as the good guys in my imagination. Villains aren’t born evil; they’re shaped by circumstances. So becoming Megatron represents a long-held dream for me.”
In this film, we discover how Optimus Prime and Megatron came to be sworn enemies. The story unfolds in a time three billion years prior to what is commonly known, depicting the gradual drifting apart of these once close friends.
As a newcomer to animation, I found myself putting faith in the intricacies of the process for the first time as Hemsorth.
He explained that animation production differs from a film set in that you don’t interact or act in real-time. Instead, we record our scenes separately. Fortunately, we could view each other’s work and adjust ours accordingly. Essentially, we pass on our parts and trust they reach their intended destination.
Henry commented that the film’s theme of lost friendships would resonate with a wide range of people. He described it as one of those painful experiences, adding, “Losing a friend is an experience we can all relate to.”
After the panel discussion, Hemsworth lingered for a while, interacting amicably with fans who thronged the stage. He graciously signed autographs and greeted many of them up close.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Chris Hemsworth electrifies the audience by staying put to grant autographs and exchange handshakes with enthusiastic fans once the panel concludes.
