As a long-time Overwatch fan, I’m finding myself feeling a mix of disappointment and confusion following the recent announcement that Overwatch 2 is considering a return to 6v6 team sizes. When Overwatch 2 was first announced, the promise of a larger PvE presence and a revamped gameplay system were major selling points for me. I’ve spent hours eagerly anticipating the new story modes and enjoying the tweaked hero pool in the 5v5 format.
At the unveiling of Overwatch 2, the primary attractions were the extended PvE experiences with several narrative campaigns and a reformed gameplay setup shifting from a six-player team to a five-versus-five configuration.
Initially, the modification in squad sizes caused controversy among players, but they’ve grown accustomed to it since the Hero pool underwent several adjustments. However, recent developments suggest a surprising reversal of this change, with 6vs6 seemingly making a comeback.
Overwatch 2 confirms 6v6 is being trialled again
In his latest blog update, Aaron Keller, the Game Director of Overwatch 2, shared that they are considering going back to the classic 6 vs. 6 team format for some aspects of the game. They plan to conduct tests to assess the potential outcomes.
The blog raised concerns about going back to 6vs6, including longer wait times for matches and optimization challenges due to Overwatch’s advanced technology. However, there is a strong desire to experiment with this format again in specific game modes.
Overwatch 2 players mock sequel as all new features are returning back to their original state

Reverting to a 6vs6 setup in Overwatch 2 would render its two major attractions obsolete, as the PvE mode (Player vs Environment) has been discontinued. This development has sparked debates among players, questioning if a sequel was truly necessary after all.
“For six years, we conducted 6vs6 play tests, which were known as Overwatch 1. But please, let’s revert it back to that. In comparison, Overwatch 2, as a successor, has underperformed and I personally dislike the 5vs5 format.”
“One individual commented, ‘There will be no PvE story missions. Team deathmatch with six versus six players is taking over from five versus five. Tanks are being significantly strengthened. Somehow we have returned to the early version of Overwatch. Amazing!'”
A third person commented, “What a wild idea: Leaving the game untouched could have benefited them financially with no justification. I personally gave up on the solo mode. Transformed the gameplay style. Lesson learned.“
Keller failed to specify a timeline or share if the 6v6 tests would be open to the public, yet the blog post hints that the modifications might occur soon.
