As a long-time film enthusiast and avid gamer of the movie industry, I can’t help but be intrigued by the behind-the-scenes stories that shape the movies we love. One such story is the infamous test screening for the Denzel Washington classic, “Training Day.”
The film “Training Day,” starring Denzel Washington in one of his most accomplished roles, came close to failing during its initial screening, according to director Antoine Fuqua. During a talk at Comic-Con’s Directors on Directors panel, Fuqua shared that it was Washington’s popularity as an actor that triggered the unfavorable feedback from the test audience.
According to Collider, Fuqua shared that the primary concern during the film’s initial screenings was Washington’s portrayal of Alonzo Harris in ” Training Day.” The character, who is murdered by the Russian mafia toward the end of the movie, left a profound impact on viewers. Consequently, many audiences reacted negatively to the film due to this shocking death scene. Fuqua stated:
“During the test screenings for Training Day, my performance where I ended up killing Denzel didn’t go over well with the audience. There were plenty of angry reactions and I nearly faced an early exit from the theater during that showing. It was certainly one of the least successful test screenings.”
The film’s success and Washington’s Academy Award win were well-deserved in the end. But early criticism could have derailed the production. In a typical Hollywood story of police corruption, the villains must be brought to justice. Consequently, it was essential that Washington’s character Harris faced appropriate consequences for his wrongdoings.
An account from Fuqua about the early response to “Training Day” at test screenings serves as a reminder: audiences’ and critics’ perspectives can be significantly influenced by individual biases. Throughout cinema history, numerous films have undergone alterations based on audience feedback during testing, resulting in improvements or disappointments. Ultimately, it’s essential to consider whether the movie stays true to the director’s original vision or merely caters to the audience’s preferences. Fuqua chose not to modify “Training Day” due to its test screenings, a choice that appears to have paid off in the long run.
Will Training Day 2 Happen?
Talk about potential follow-ups to beloved films is a common topic on social media and the internet. However, the prospect of a sequel to “Training Day” hasn’t gained much traction. Instead, this movie inspired a TV series in 2015, titled the same, which featured Bill Paxton and Justin Cromwell in its cast. Sadly, Paxton passed away before the show could gain popularity. The connection to Washington’s character was merely mentioned once in the season finale. Unfortunately, with low ratings that season, CBS canceled the series.
Approximately seven years ago, Warner Bros. initiated the production of a prequel film named “Training Day: Riot’s Eve” (Working title). This movie intends to portray Alonzo as a young officer and is set in the context of the Rodney King trial verdict announcement and the subsequent Los Angeles riots. Principal photography for this project started in 2022, but since then, there has been limited information regarding its progression. However, it’s essential to mention that Warner Bros. has not officially canceled the film yet.
