This 18th-Century Lake Como Villa Goes Contemporary With J. Mayer H.

As a seasoned traveler and architecture enthusiast with a penchant for historic charm and modern flair, I must say that J. Mayer H.’s renovation of the 18th-century villa on Lake Como has left me absolutely smitten!

J. Mayer H., a well-known German architectural firm recognized for their iconic Metropol Parasol makeover of Seville’s Plaza de la Encarnacion in Spain, has recently revealed their newest project: a 18th-century villa situated on the scenic Lake Como, given a fresh lease of life through contemporary design features and an intriguing mix of colors.

The house’s authentic exterior was mostly preserved, with thoughtful enhancements like updated window frames and meticulous refinements. Many parts of the villa still bear its original hues, while fresh awnings and green shutters add a modern touch.

In the meantime, the garden underwent a comprehensive makeover. It boasted fresh regional stones along the pool’s edge, a prominent Tony Matelli sculpture installed, and a new dock suited for larger boats. The grotto was also upgraded with cave-like showers and changing rooms, as well as a rejuvenating water feature filled with water lilies and fish.

Within the villa, the original forms of surfaces and integrated furniture remain unchanged. However, each room is given a fresh, contemporary feel with new monochromatic paint finishes that highlight the home’s historical character, showcasing its centuries-old marks of wear. Rooms facing the lake benefit from lighter colors to harmonize with the water’s deep blue tones, while other spaces feature darker shades to create soothing, quiet hideaways. Notably, two corner rooms housing the kitchen and study are adorned with mirrored ceilings, an exquisite touch by Parisian artist Matthieu Cossé.
