As a die-hard fan of The Boys, I can confidently say that this series has truly outdone itself with its exceptional storytelling and meta commentary. Seven years ago, when Erin Moriarty auditioned for the role of Starlight, she not only showcased her acting chops but also demonstrated an uncanny ability to embody the character in a way that only a true fan could appreciate. The fact that she performed a scene where her character was auditioning for the team she would later join is nothing short of brilliant – it’s like the writers and casting directors were sending us a message that this show is all about layers upon layers of self-awareness.
“One remarkable aspect of The Boys is its ability to deliver insightful commentary, often poking fun at the superhero genre and its portrayals in movies and TV shows. This satire can be seen on-screen, but it also seems to permeate behind the scenes – for instance, during Erin Moriarty’s audition for the role of Annie January, a.k.a. Starlight in 2014.”
Seven summers ago, the actress landed a leading role on one of Prime Video’s prominent series, which is now celebrating its fourth season. To mark this occasion, she shared her excitement about it on her Instagram, reminiscing about the scene she read during auditions that turned out to be spot-on. Her caption read, “Perfect from day 1.”
7 years back, I tried out for The Seven (and that specific audition moment was my entry point for the series). Blinked, and now it’s a 3-week sprint towards season 4. Here’s to the show that feels like a second home, the colleagues who have etched their place in my heart as family, and to all those who have watched and continue to do so. And to fathers and sweethearts (you know who you are)! #iykyk @theboystv
As a devoted fan, I must say there’s nothing more intriguing than trying out for a role by enacting the character’s audition scene, isn’t it? This unique approach allows actors to showcase their talents in a distinctive and tailored manner, giving filmmakers a glimpse of whether they possess the desired qualities. It seems that Erin Moriarty was precisely what the producers were searching for when casting Annie, and now, four seasons later, we can confidently assert that the perfect choice was made.
In case you’re not completely sure, let me remind you that Annie, in the initial episode of The Boys, was seen at Vought International aiming to secure a position within The Seven. During her conversation, she spoke about her childhood in Iowa and participating in Miss Hero pageants, expressing her wish to “save the world.” She brushed off the skepticism of those who snickered at her optimism and aspirations… which seems amusing now when we look back at it, given everything we’ve since learned about superheroes and Vought.
In the pilot episode, Starlight expresses her lifelong dream of saving the world, and she might just get that opportunity in the fifth season of The Boys, marking its final run. The situation within the show’s universe is becoming increasingly ominous as (SPOILER ALERT) the US government has collapsed, giving The Seven unbridled power. Sister Sage and Homelander are far from finished with their grand schemes, while Billy Butcher has not only gone mad but also developed lethal tendrils sprouting from his chest and holds a virus capable of wiping out every superhuman on Earth.
At the end of Season 4, Annie stands out as one of the few main characters who remains unbound and mentally sound. Consequently, it’s quite advantageous that she manages to fully reclaim her abilities.
A release date for The Boys Season 5 has not yet been revealed, but Amazon Prime subscribers can stay tuned here on TopMob for not only updates about the critically acclaimed series, but also Season 2 of Gen V and news about Vought Rising – the new prequel spinoff show that was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024.
