As a die-hard fan of Bollywood and its intricate tapestry, I must confess that my heart skips a beat whenever I revisit the masterpiece that is Omkara. The film, directed by the genius Vishal Bharadwaj, is a testament to his exceptional storytelling abilities, and it’s a pleasure to delve deeper into its making through the eyes of one of its unsung heroes, Dolly Ahluwalia.
One of Vishal Bharadwaj’s finest creations to date is the film “Omkara,” which featured Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi, Bipasha Basu, and others in its star-studded cast. Recently, Dolly Ahluwalia, who worked as a costume designer on the 2006 production, praised Kareena Kapoor and shared an amusing story from the set.
In a recent chat with The Punjabi Link, Dolly Ahluwalia, who played a role in Vicky Donor, discussed her time collaborating with the talented ensemble of Omkara.
Dolly mentioned that she frequently dropped by Kareena Kapoor’s home to try on costumes. However, it’s important to note that there’s no truth to any rumors regarding Kareena; instead, the costume designer emphasized her warm personality.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but exclaim that Kareena is nothing short of enchanting. There have been countless conversations among folks when I embarked on this journey, but let me tell you, she stands out as truly exceptional.
Dolly added that she had a genuinely pleasant experience working alongside Bipasha Basu, contrary to gossip suggesting she’s prone to throwing fits.
Regarding Vivek Oberoi, it was mentioned that he was quite playful during the filming of Omkara. She highlighted his behavior as more “mischievous” rather than “malicious”. In fact, she referred to both Vivek Oberoi and Ajay Devgn as the “masterminds of pranks” on set.
During a film shoot for Omkara, the costume designer-actress shared an anecdote about receiving special bhaang sweets on set, leading some crew members to briefly lose consciousness.
When asked about director Vishal Bhardwaj’s response, she shared that while the filmmaker might have been briefly irritated, he understood it wasn’t anything substantial. It turned out that the incident was just another playful moment on the movie set and a cherished memory in retrospect.
Drawing inspiration from the work of William Shakespeare, specifically his play “Othello”, the cast included Konkana Sen Sharma, Naseeruddin Shah, and Deepak Dobariyal in pivotal positions.
Dolly Ahluwalia is known for her work as a costume designer in numerous Bollywood films, with Bandit Queen being the movie where she began her career in 1993. Some of her most notable projects besides Omkara include Love Aaj Kal, Aaja Nachle, Rockstar, Haider, Kaminey and others.
She got recognition as an actress with Ayushmann Khurrana and Yami Gautam’s 2012 film, Vicky Donor.
