Jason Kelce Wore His Olympic Beret For His ESPN NFL Countdown Debut, And Fans Have A Lot Of Thoughts

As a die-hard sports enthusiast with a soft spot for the underdog, I can’t help but appreciate Jason Kelce’s unique and unapologetic approach to his new role at ESPN. The man has always been one to break the mold, from reciting Salt-N-Pepa lyrics on Jeopardy! to now sporting an Olympic beret on the NFL Countdown table. It’s this quirky charm that makes him stand out and endears him to fans like myself.

Although Jason Kelce retired from professional football this year, he hasn’t shied away from sports. Just before his debut as an analyst on ESPN in their 2024 broadcast schedule, Kelce and his wife Kylie were cheering on Team USA during the 2024 Olympics in Paris. He even donned a beret while there, which made for a charming and amusing fashion statement. Interestingly, he continued to wear the beret upon his return to the US for NFL Countdown, and this choice sparked some passionate reactions from fans as he began his new role at ESPN.

The beret, adorned with pins reminiscent of Taylor Swift’s friendship bracelets following his displays of support for the U.S. women’s rugby team and others in Paris, didn’t quite coordinate with the suit he wore on his NFL Countdown debut. However, it was far from the shorts and sandals that inspired the joke about his wardrobe consisting only of jeans and khakis! Check out the image below where he settles at the ESPN table:

As someone who has spent years working in a corporate environment where conformity and professionalism were paramount, I found it refreshing to see this man boldly starting his new job while donning his beret from the Olympics. It added a touch of individuality and personality that is often missing in such rigid settings. His quip about being “on Paris time” may have raised eyebrows among his coworkers, but to me, it was just another example of him embracing his unique style and not caring what others thought.

  • @sarahhmccrory: “Jason Kelce is wearing a beret with Olympic pins on it”
  • @whoistayvis: “I was not expecting to turn on ESPN and see Jason Kelce in a beret his first night on the job”
  • @MKSongbird: “the merge is complete and the beret and jason kelce have become one.”
  • @maurafenske: “The question is why *wouldn’t* Jason Kelce wear his Olympic-worn beret on his first-ever ESPN broadcast”
  • @THATJoshKail: “It’s not a surprise, but Jason Kelce is so good at this. Also, dude is rocking a beret”
  • @bldelaurentis: “My new fav genre of picture is Jason Kelce in a beret”
  • @marpstars: “Jason Kelce and his beret is 10/10 so excited for football being back”
  • @newheightshow: “Jason brought the beret with him to work”

Though the recent post isn’t the most amusing, it certainly earns an additional chuckle from me because it was sent by the account of New Heights, the podcast co-hosted by Jason Kelce and his brother Travis. The post also featured the laughing-crying emoji, adding to its charm. I’m officially on Team Beret!

Typically, fans might look forward to hearing more about Travis Kelce’s headwear on NFL Countdown soon due to their podcast. However, the brothers are taking a break from podcasting at the moment as Travis is preparing for the Kansas City Chiefs’ upcoming season. They plan to resume in late August or early September. So, any informal discussions between the Kelces about the beret will have to be put on hold for now.

If you’re having just as much fun watching the 2024 Paris Olympics as Jason Kelce did in France (even without a beret), the broadcast will carry on via NBC and Peacock Premium subscription until the closing ceremony on August 11. Whether or not Tom Cruise is involved, it’s all part of the excitement!
