One Thing About Deadpool And Wolverine That's Still Nagging At Me

As a long-time Marvel fanatic who’s been following the cinematic universe since its inception, I must confess that the opening scenes of Deadpool & Wolverine left me scratching my head more than once. While I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and the chemistry between Reynolds and Jackman was electric, I found myself questioning the timeline shenanigans that took place in the early moments of the film.

Spoilers ahead for Deadpool & Wolverine.

Following years of eager anticipation as the most highly-awaited Marvel film in a long time, the “Deadpool & Wolverine” movie has been released and is shattering box office records. As a dedicated Marvel fan who’s watched every movie in sequence, I made certain to catch Shawn Levy’s blockbuster on its opening weekend. Despite enjoying the film immensely, there’s one aspect about “Deadpool 3” that continues to bother me. Let’s delve into the details.

In the film “Deadpool 3,” Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s playful rivalry was evident, and their interaction sparkled on-screen. However, I found myself puzzled in the initial scenes, a confusion that has lingered since then. Particularly intriguing is the scene where Wade Wilson employs Cable’s time machine to visit the Sacred Timeline and query Jon Favreau’s character, Happy Hogan, about joining The Avengers.

In this scene, we discover that Wade Wilson is present in the primary universe, also known as Earth-616, or the sacred timeline. Following a rejection by Happy, he finds himself back in his original universe, referred to as Earth-1005. However, I had believed that Deadpool possessed a fixed time machine, not one capable of traversing multiple universes. Even if it can, this transition between realities seems unnecessary, given the circumstances. But then again, isn’t it just typical of Deadpool to complicate things?

It’s plausible that Cable’s device was a machine capable of traversing different universes all along. During the chaotic credits scene of Deadpool 2, Wade Wilson seemingly fired at actor Ryan Reynolds, who was notoriously known for his failed Green Lantern movie attempt. If Reynolds and DC Comics didn’t exist in Earth-1005 (a hypothetical universe), then it seems that Wade Wilson was already exploring multiple realities before the concept of multiverse travel became popular within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It seems that the reason the Avengers didn’t appear in the final two movies of the R-rated Deadpool franchise is because Deadpool needed to travel to Earth-616, which might have been necessary for the storyline. However, I found the opening sequence for the third movie a bit confusing as it wasn’t immediately clear how or why Wade Wilson had been in two separate timelines. My theater companion and I were left perplexed during much of the beginning scenes.

In the early scenes of Deadpool & Wolverine, the frequent time jumps left me puzzled about which reality we were witnessing when Deadpool’s character was celebrating his birthday during the opening act. Fast forward six years, and it’s clear that Wade Wilson and Morena Baccarin’s character, Vanessa, are no longer together. However, due to the multiverse being a factor, I wasn’t sure if their separation occurred in this universe or if we were watching an alternate reality where they never got together. Despite the initial confusion, everything eventually made sense in the end, but those first few scenes of the movie were indeed perplexing.
