‘Doctor Who’ Episode Featuring Disgraced BBC News Anchor Huw Edwards Removed from iPlayer

As a seasoned gamer and long-time fan of both Doctor Who and James Bond, this recent development has left me utterly disheartened. Huw Edwards, once a familiar and trusted voice in British media, has now become synonymous with a despicable act that tarnishes not only his reputation but also the beloved shows he was involved with.

The “Doctor Who” episode featuring Huw Edwards was taken down from BBC iPlayer following the news anchor’s admission of creating inappropriate child images.

Supporters are advocating for the removal of the 62-year-old’s scene from the James Bond movie “Skyfall”, as it was recently disclosed that Edwards, formerly the BBC’s top-earning news anchor, was arrested in November. He appeared in court this week and was charged last month. On Wednesday, he made his case during a short hearing at Westminster Magistrates Court in London.

The alleged crimes occurred from the year 2020 up until 2022. Edwards confessed to possessing 41 indecent child images, received from a convicted pedophile named Alex Williams on WhatsApp. Among these were seven category A images, the most serious classification, two of which depicted a child within the age range of seven to nine, as the court was informed.

In the 2006 episode of “Doctor Who,” David Tennant and Billie Piper (as Rose Tyler) journeyed to the year 2012 Olympics in London. However, they were not there just for spectacle as they ended up saving lives again when a young girl was unintentionally making people vanish by drawing them. During one instance, the voice of Edwards could be heard from a BBC news report broadcast: “Goodness gracious, what’s happening here? The crowd has simply vanished right in front of my eyes. It’s inconceivable. Bob, can we move to your booth? Bob? Even you aren’t spared?”

After the tenth Doctor brings back the crowd, Edwards’ voice echoes once more: “They’re back! Incredible, isn’t it? And this unknown figure has taken up the torch. It’s not just warmth and illumination; it’s hope, bravery, and love.” Unfortunately, this episode is not being shown alongside series two on iPlayer at this time. The BBC has yet to respond to The Hollywood Reporter‘s inquiry for a comment.

Movie enthusiasts, including myself, are pondering potential solutions regarding Edward’s appearance in the 2012 film Skyfall, where he portrayed himself as a news reporter covering a made-up attack on MI6.

BBC News encounters larger challenges and an abundance of historical content to sort through. For many years, Edwards served as their most reliable anchor, spearheading significant broadcasts for the network, such as the news of Queen Elizabeth II’s passing and the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The host of BBC’s prime-time news program, “News at Ten,” appeared at court accompanied by eight police officers on Wednesday, showing no emotion. He is facing possible imprisonment.

In the context of British law, ‘images’ refers to both photos and videos. The term ‘making’ indecent images encompasses various activities, as defined by law. For instance, this could involve opening an email attachment containing an image, downloading an image from a website, saving it on your device, accessing a pornographic site where images appear unexpectedly in pop-ups, receiving such an image via social media (even if unwanted and part of a group), or live-streaming child-related content.

On Thursday, Labour’s Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy, phoned BBC’s Director-General Tim Davie to express concerns about how the organization managed the case. A representative from the Department of Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) informed The Hollywood Reporter on Friday that Nandy is shocked by Edwards’ reprehensible behavior. The DCMS stated that it is now the responsibility of the judiciary to determine a fitting punishment for the ex-news anchor.

Last summer, the BBC temporarily halted operations involving Edward due to accusations, similar to those by The Sun newspaper, that he asked a minor for inappropriate photos of a sexual nature. However, the police found no substantial proof indicating that Edwards broke any laws regarding these allegations as they concluded there was no evidence of a criminal act being committed.

Last summer, it was revealed that Edwards was hospitalized due to severe mental health concerns, as confirmed by his wife Vicky Flind. Following a 10-month break, he stepped down from the BBC in April for health reasons related to mental health.
