Star Wars Director Learned His Lando Series Was Canceled in the Worst Way

As a dedicated fan of both Star Wars and Star Trek, I can’t help but feel a rollercoaster of emotions when it comes to Donald Glover’s journey as Lando Calrissian. On one hand, I’m heartbroken for Justin Simien, who seemed destined to bring us an incredible Lando adventure, only to have the project get shelved. It’s like losing a beloved pet, or in this case, a highly anticipated sci-fi series. But on the other hand, I’m thrilled that fate has led Simien to another galaxy – the one where the Starfleet insignia glows brightly.

Donald Glover’s portrayal of Lando Calrissian took an unpredictable course following “Solo: A Star Wars Story”. Initially, a Disney+ series was announced, but Glover later disclosed a creative shift. Later, it was revealed that the series would transform into a movie instead, only to be put on hold indefinitely. This turn of events was deeply disappointing for director Justin Simien, who had been set to helm the project. He learned about the change in a particularly tough way. “It became evident…although they might not want me to say this, I knew it was confirmed when I read it in the trade publications,” Simien shared with Collider. He detailed the progress of the project:

The project had advanced significantly, boasting a Bible, concept artwork, and scripts. However, it seemed destined not to materialize.

Simien expressed dramatically, “This is indeed deep sorrow. I’ve neither given birth nor lost a child, but this seems to be the kind of pain one might experience. You invest so much love and life force into something, yet you can’t dictate its survival or demise. This, to me, is an authentic grieving period… For myself, I have to express it honestly: ‘I am grieving. I do not feel well.’ I must allow myself to experience these emotions.”

From Star Wars to Star Trek

In a rather surprising turn of events, Simien is shifting his focus to another prominent science fiction universe – Star Trek. At San Diego Comic Con, it was revealed that the director known for projects such as ‘Dear White People’, ‘Bad Hair’, and ‘Haunted Mansion’ will be collaborating on what appears to be a comedic Star Trek series. Simien is teaming up with the talented comedienne Tawny Newsome, who has previous experience in sci-fi, having portrayed Beckett Marine in ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ and starred in the Netflix show ‘Space Force’, alongside Steve Carrell.
