Heeramandi: Aditi Rao Hydari recalls performing her first mujra; says ‘costume was heavy and my brain was not taking in anymore’

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for artistry and a deep appreciation for resilience, I must commend Aditi Rao Hydari for her extraordinary performance in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. Her portrayal of Bibbojaan was not just a display of acting prowess, but a testament to her determination and grit.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali gathered a remarkable ensemble for his first OTT series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Market, which included actress Aditi Rao Hydari. Her character Bibbojaan in the TV show garnered widespread acclaim. Viewers were spellbound by her enchanting gait, and her strong, memorable performance left a lasting impression on them.

However, portraying that challenging role for Aditi Rao Hydari wasn’t as simple as it might appear. To master her debut mujra scene in the film, she endured numerous trials and tribulations. At the Achievers Dialogues 2024 event held at Presidency University in Bengaluru, Aditi shared insights on her character in Heeramandi.

From personal experience, I strongly believe that following one’s heart and unwaveringly pursuing dreams is crucial to achieving success. To illustrate this point, I recall an instance from my days shooting a period drama, where I was reprimanded by the filmmaker during a particular scene. Despite the challenges, I persevered, and it taught me that every setback is merely a stepping stone towards greater heights. This experience has reinforced my belief that persistence and passion are key ingredients for realizing one’s dreams.

Aditi shared with Bollywood Hungama that her first mujra scene was filmed during the initial stages of the TV series. She also mentioned that her debut mujra song, Saiyaan Hatto Jaao, was shot while she was still recuperating from COVID-19.

“After the first day, the costume felt quite weighty, and I found myself unable to absorb any more information,” she disclosed, further explaining that she could decipher SLB’s instructions clearly. Yet, she acknowledged, the execution of those instructions (or ‘the firing’) wasn’t occurring as expected.

Discussing further the difficulties she encountered, the actress from Padmaavat admitted that while her director’s words seemed perfectly logical, she felt let down within herself because it appeared he wasn’t satisfied with their work. However, fortunately, right before they concluded filming, they managed to achieve exactly what was required. “What drove me,” Rao shared, “was the fact that he had so much faith in us, and I didn’t want him to feel disappointed.”

For those not familiar, the Netflix series includes actresses such as Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Sharmin Segal Mehta, Taha Shah Badussha, Farida Jalal, Adhyayan Suman, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman, among others. It portrays the lives and hardships of courtesans in Lahore’s red-light district, Heera Mandi, and their role in India’s fight for independence.
