As an ardent admirer of the magical world of Bollywood, I find myself in awe of the indomitable spirit and resilience displayed by actors like Anupam Kher. The tale of his bravery during the shoot of Hum Aapke Hain Koun is not just a testament to his professionalism but also a beacon of inspiration for us all.
Thirty years ago today, the beloved film “Hum Aapke Hain Koun,” starring Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit, was released. This Sooraj Barjatya-directed family musical is a timeless classic that still resonates with audiences worldwide. Interesting trivia from its set was even shared by Anupam Kher at one point.
Few people realize that during the filming of HAHK, the veteran actor experienced facial paralysis. Remarkably, he filmed the memorable antakshri scene in this condition. In a past episode of Aap Ki Adalat, Kher disclosed in Hindi that he first learned about his condition while dining with Anil Kapoor. It was during this visit when Sunita Kapoor noticed, “Anupam, you’re only blinking with one eye.”
The following day, an incident occurred while he was rinsing his teeth. Water accidentally seeped out of his mouth unexpectedly. Upon noticing this, Anupam Kher immediately informed Yash Chopra about everything that had happened, including how since the previous night, his face had been inexplicably moving towards the left side.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: “The seasoned director counseled me to seek medical attention, whereupon the doctor suggested a break of two months without any activity and advised me to unwind at home. Reflecting on that time, I remember him prescribing medication because I was in quite a critical state.”
On that day, Anupam Kher made his debut in the Antakshri scene (the pillow game sequence followed by songs) of Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! As the 69-year-old was heading home from a doctor’s visit, he pondered, “If I rest at home today for two months, I will live in fear forever.” In the future, he might believe that quitting work is the best option when unwell.
Anupam Kher chose not to dwell on that particular thought and promptly headed to Filmistan, the location of the ongoing filming. He humorously mentioned later that Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan initially thought he was joking when he made a certain facial expression. However, once gathered together, he explained his situation to them while also expressing his readiness to carry on with the shooting.
