Shah Rukh Khan and Subhash Ghai had 'man-mutav' during Pardes shoot recalls veteran filmmaker; 'tu-tu main-main chalti rahti thi'

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for the intricacies of Bollywood, I must say Subhash Ghai’s career is a testament to the power of creative control and perseverance in the face of disagreements. His decision to steer clear of contemporary stars post the success of Karz speaks volumes about his commitment to his artistic vision.

Subhash Ghai, a renowned filmmaker known for his impactful works, has steered several critically-acclaimed movies such as Pardes, Lamhe, Hero, Taal, and Khal Nayak over the years. Although he’s taken a step back from active directing, he continues to captivate audiences with tales from his nearly five-decade career. In a recent chat, Ghai disclosed some interesting behind-the-scenes details about his work, including admitting that he and leading actor Shah Rukh Khan had creative differences during the production of Pardes.

In a recent chat on The Invincibles Series Season 2 with Arbaaz Khan, Ghai openly talked about his challenging professional relationship with Shah Rukh Khan while making Pardes, admitting they often clashed. Interestingly, the director admitted that after the success of Karz, he intentionally opted to work less with contemporary stars so he could maintain artistic control over his productions.

As if I worked alongside Shah Rukh in a foreign land, and certain scenes he penned were even better, our minds constantly intertwined, we danced around each other, but he elevated the scene beyond my expectations. Then after Karz (1980), I contemplated that if any current stars refuse to act alongside me, there won’t be a movie at all, if it’s going to be authentic.

In my collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan on Pardes, although he excelled in certain scenes beyond what was scripted, we frequently clashed and argued. Yet, he consistently elevated the performance. Following Karz (1980), I chose not to team up with any contemporary stars if I aimed to create a sincere film.

Ghai explicitly opted to collaborate less with modern celebrities, ensuring he retained full artistic oversight on his movies.

In a forthcoming project on the career side, Jawaan actor is set to appear alongside his daughter, Suhana Khan, in the movie titled “King”. His character will portray a Don in this highly anticipated action-packed drama. The storyline of “King” delves into the intense voyage of a mentor and his students, facing numerous survival tests together.

In this upcoming movie, Suhana Khan makes her screen debut, playing a student of Shah Rukh Khan’s character. The choice of title, “King,” emphasizes Shah Rukh Khan’s role as the “King of the World… Underworld” in this action-packed thriller.
