Animal: Ram Gopal Varma lauds Ranbir Kapoor and Sandeep Reddy Vanga's film; says it 'did better than the so-called...'

As a connoisseur of cinema who’s seen more films than I care to remember, I must say that Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s “Animal” has left quite an impression on me. It’s like a wild beast roaring in the jungle of Bollywood, defying conventions and challenging the status quo.

In a twist during its premiere, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s movie “Animal” faced criticism from certain viewers. Released in 2023, this film was accused of encouraging harmful masculinity and glorifying disrespect towards women. Notable figures like Ratna Pathak Shah and Adil Hussain didn’t seem to appreciate the Ranbir Kapoor-led production. However, actress Vidya Balan and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap expressed their approval of the film. Ram Gopal Varma, a seasoned director, has also joined the supporters who are impressed by its achievement.

In a recent chat with Galatta Plus, Ram Gopal Varma commended the film Animal, stating that it surpassed the earnings of high-budget films at the box office despite having a modest budget. Interestingly, according to RGV, among his other movies featuring Ranbir Kapoor such as Shamshera and Brahmastra, Animal was the most economical production.

Sandeep’s film, which is known as Ranbir’s, has outperformed many high-budget movies in terms of earnings, according to RGV. This suggests that there aren’t always strict guidelines for success in the film industry.

In a surprising twist, the filmmaker conceded that Sandeep Reddy Vanga disproved the common recipe for success. This is because the movie “Animal” had one of the smallest budgets compared to its production worth.

The director of Satya, in his viewpoint, emphasized that moviegoers have varying preferences when it comes to film selection. He likened the movie Animal to an anticipated sequel of Gadar 2, suggesting that some viewers might disapprove of both films. RGV analogously stated that just as people may favor different dishes, so too can preferences for movies differ among individuals.

In a conversation with Lallantop, Ratna Pathak Shah revealed that she chose not to watch the movie ‘Animal’ due to fear triggered by its poster and the film’s overall mood. She admitted to feeling disconnected from its central theme.

Simultaneously, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap shared with YouTuber Janice Sequeira his appreciation for the movie Animal, despite his daughter Aaliyah Kashyap’s dislike of it. While Aaliyah strongly disliked the film, Anurag expressed his belief that its influence would be recognized 5-10 years down the line.

In addition to Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, Triptii Dimri, and Bobby Deol, this movie featured a cast of animals as well. The film was produced with a budget of INR 100 crores and grossed approximately INR 917.82 crores worldwide at the box office. It hit the screens on December 1, 2023.
