Broadway Box Office: ‘The Outsiders’ Box Office Keeps Climbing, ‘Once Upon A Mattress’ Joins Fray

As a devoted theater enthusiast who has witnessed countless productions over the years, I must say that the recent success of “The Outsiders” musical at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre is nothing short of extraordinary! Breaking the box office record for seven consecutive weeks and raking in an impressive $1.49 million last week – all while only one more person attended compared to the previous week – truly speaks volumes about its captivating appeal.

For a week straight for the seventh time since its Tony performance, the musical adaptation of “The Outsiders” shattered the weekly box office record at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.

Last week, the award-winning musical brought in a total of $1.49 million at the box office. This is approximately $27,000 higher than the previous week’s earnings, despite only one additional ticket being sold. Interestingly, the average price for a ticket increased from $174 to $177.

The musical “Chicago” significantly increased its earnings at the box office last week, raking in $820,608 compared to the previous week’s total, which was boosted by the return of Ariana Madix from “Vanderpump Rules” as a star performer on August 1.

The dance-centric musical titled “Illinoise,” which includes songs from Sufjan Stevens, experienced a significant boost in revenue, approximately $99,000, to reach $878,076 as it approaches the final day of its run on August 10th.

If not, it was the usual trio of blockbusters, “The Lion King” ($2.38 million), “Wicked” ($2.19 million) and “Hamilton” ($1.95 million), that reigned supreme in terms of box office earnings. Alicia Keys’ production, “Hell’s Kitchen”, still managed impressive earnings, totaling $1.6 million for the week, placing it fourth among industry grosses.

Last week, the comeback of the musical comedy “Once Upon A Mattress,” featuring Sutton Foster, Michael Urie, and Ana Gasteyer, entered the competitive scene, commencing previews at the Hudson Theatre on July 31, following its stint Off-Broadway at City Center. In its initial five shows on Broadway, the production earned $529,882 and was completely sold out.

Despite the introduction of “Once Upon A Mattress”, the cumulative box office earnings decreased by 2.4% compared to the previous week. This drop was accompanied by a minor decline in audience attendance of less than 0.5%. The week saw the premiere of the new play “Job” with complimentary tickets, and one cancelled performance at “The Wiz”.
