Sega Has Already Trademarked A New Yakuza Game In Japan

As a dedicated Yakuza fan with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and cautious anticipation upon hearing the news that Sega has trademarked “Yakuza Wars.” While I remember the initial transition from “Yakuza” to “Like a Dragon” leaving me slightly perplexed, I’ve come to appreciate the series under its new moniker.

Story Highlights

  • Sega has already trademarked a new Like a Dragon game in Japan called Yakuza Wars.
  • The trademark was filed on July 26, 2024, and has now appeared in the Chizai Watch database.
  • The new filing allegedly confirms that RGG Studio is already developing a new entry in the IP.

According to Twitter posts by gaming tipster Wario64, Sega has recently filed a new game trademark called “Yakuza Wars” in Japan. This trademark was registered on July 26 of this year and can now be found in the Chizai Watch database. The trademark is related to software for video games, but further details about the game remain unclear at this time.

A different piece of evidence supports the claim that Sega registered the Yakuza Wars trademark for the Like a Dragon series: GameWatch, a well-known gaming site in Japan, disclosed in April 2024 that RGG Studio had begun hiring actors and actresses for the upcoming installment of the Like a Dragon franchise. However, the series producer, Masayoshi Yokoyama, clarified that this new venture would not be connected to the remake of Yakuza 3.

Not Much Is Known About The New Yakuza Game

The trademark could imply a new Yakuza sequel or a spin-off title, but the naming scheme makes no sense. Sega has been trying to rebrand the series to “Like a Dragon” for Western audiences, so reverting back to it would only confuse the fans. Although, RGG Studio could always go for another name for the final release.

In summary, it’s wise to approach any news about the trademark with a bit of skepticism. While it’s not surprising that RGG Studio might be starting work on the next Yakuza game, we currently know very little about it. Given that Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth was released just this year and has already sold in the millions, it’s likely we won’t get significant updates on the franchise until later in the year.
