John Cena’s Ferdinand Becomes Netflix Smash Seven Years After Release

John Cena's Ferdinand Becomes Netflix Smash Seven Years After Release

As a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for underdog stories, I must say that the resurgence of John Cena’s animated masterpiece, Ferdinand, on Netflix is nothing short of heartwarming. This film, produced by Blue Sky Studios, the brilliant minds behind the Ice Age franchise, was initially overlooked when it hit the big screens in 2017. But now, it’s challenging SpongeBob for supremacy on Netflix, proving that sometimes, peace and pacifism can indeed conquer all!

An almost overlooked film featuring the voice of John Cena as an animated bull has surged up global Netflix rankings. This movie, titled Ferdinand, was one of Blue Sky Studios’ last productions, renowned for creating the popular Ice Age series. Initially, Ferdinand failed to perform well domestically when it was released in 2017. However, it now seems to be experiencing a resurgence on the streaming platform.

Ferdinand originates from the 1936 children’s book “The Story of Ferdinand,” which Disney had earlier adapted into a short animated film in 1938. This tale revolves around a gentle bull who, unintentionally, finds himself amidst the arena of matadors and bullfighting. Despite his nonviolent nature, he eventually confronts the world’s top bullfighter in a battle that challenges his deeply held convictions.

As a lifelong animation enthusiast, I must say that I was quite impressed with the latest Blue Sky Studios film, which featured an impressive ensemble cast and showcased their signature high-quality animation before the studio closed down in 2021. Unfortunately, the movie didn’t find much traction in the U.S., but it became a hit internationally, grossing $296 million worldwide against its $111 million budget. It was also a great honor to see this film receive nominations at both the Academy Awards and Golden Globes, making it the last Blue Sky Studio release to do so before the studio was absorbed by Disney following their merger with Fox. Overall, I believe that this movie is a must-watch for anyone who loves animation and appreciates the hard work and talent that went into creating it.

It’s no shock that summer break has shaken up the regular rankings on Netflix worldwide. While Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher films are holding strong at home, it’s a different story overseas. In the international market, there’s been a massive surge of animated movies climbing into the Top 10. It seems parents everywhere are seeking something vibrant and engaging to entertain their tired kids.

At present, “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie,” the latest release from SpongeBob SquarePants, is narrowly dominating the charts, with “Ferdinand” following closely behind in second place. Other animated films on the chart include “The Bad Guys,” starring Sam Rockwell and Awkwafina from 2022, as well as “Minions: The Rise of Gru.” The latter has seen a significant boost in popularity since the cinema release of “Despicable Me 4” last month. Both movies were well-received by audiences when they initially hit theaters, though “The Bad Guys” didn’t perform exceptionally well at box offices. However, thanks to Netflix’s influence, all these films are currently enjoying renewed attention.

1. The two most popular movies are significantly ahead of all others in terms of global viewership, and it looks like the SpongeBob movie will maintain its spot at the top of the worldwide rankings for some time to come. On the other hand, Netflix’s current biggest attraction is the series “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder,” starring Emma Myers from Wednesday, which has been Netflix’s most-watched show globally since its August 2 release.
