I Can't Get Enough Of This Chevy Chase Impression By Cory Michael Smith In The Raunchy And Chaotic Saturday Night Red-Band Trailer

As someone who has grown up with the wit and humor of Saturday Night Live (SNL) shaping my sense of comedy, I am beyond excited for Jason Reitman’s upcoming movie, Saturday Night. Being a child of the ’90s, I can vividly recall the anticipation that built each week as we waited for our beloved SNL cast members to grace our TV screens.

Up until October 10, 1975, I had no clue about what Saturday Night Live was or where it was headed. The very next day, Lorne Michaels took the stage and unleashed a 90-minute live comedy sketch show that introduced the world to some of the most legendary performers who crafted iconic skits that still resonate in network history. Looking back now, the concept of Saturday Night Live feels like it was destined to happen. But the initial trailer for Jason Reitman’s upcoming Saturday Night makes it seem like NBC itself didn’t believe Michaels and his team could make it big, as if we weren’t ready for our time in the spotlight.

Up top, you’ll find a glimpse into Jason Reitman’s film titled “Saturday Night“, boasting an exceptional ensemble who are imitating well-loved SNL veterans. While there are many commendable performances in this initial look, Cory Michael Smith‘s Chevy Chase impersonation is certainly my favorite. I can hardly wait for the movie to hit theaters later this year.

The film, as you notice, follows the 90 minutes preceding the broadcast of the first episode of Saturday Night Live. This means that Reitman’s movie showcases captivating depictions of the iconic early cast members: Dan Aykroyd (played by Dylan O’Brien), Jane Curtain (Kim Matula), Gilda Radner (Ella Hunt), and Chevy Chase (Cory Michael Smith). However, the narrative appears to be told from the perspective of Michaels, who is played in the movie by Gabriel LaBelle, who previously starred as Sammy Fabelman in Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical award-winning film.

While viewing the preview, you can’t help but sense the intense pressure associated with executing a groundbreaking live broadcast. The creation of Saturday Night Live, for instance, took a significant toll on numerous performers, such as Jay Mohr. However, what makes this initial trailer captivating is the identification of legends who graced the stage during its debut. Keep an eye out for the eccentric performance artist Andy Kaufman, Jim Henson (portrayed by Nicholas Braun), Billy Crystal (Nicholas Podany), and others.

Additionally, I’m quite fond of the aesthetic of Saturday Night. Filmmakers Jason Reitman and Eric Steelberg (known for Up in the Air and Ghostbusters: Afterlife) have filmed it on actual film stock, which gives the impression of a 1975-captured, time-preserved film canister. This lends an authentic and tangible atmosphere to the period comedy.

On Saturdays, Saturday Night Live remains crucial (essentially indispensable) in shaping our culture, and anticipates growing even more impactful as we approach a tumultuous presidential election period. Viewers of the series look forward to Maya Rudolph reappearing as Kamala Harris when it resumes for its groundbreaking 50th season. Thus, it’s intriguing to ponder how Reitman will portray this long-standing show during its early phases, recreating iconic cast members and offering a glimpse of the moments just before the host declared for the first time, “Live from New York. It’s Saturday night!” As we eagerly await its return, let’s take a look at the 2025 movie premiere dates.
