As a longtime Marvel fan and avid gamer, I am absolutely thrilled by this potential connection between “Avengers: Doomsday” and the classic video game “Marvel Ultimate Alliance”. Growing up, I spent countless hours exploring the rich Marvel Universe through this game, and seeing it potentially serve as inspiration for a future Avengers film is truly exciting.
Fans are eagerly anticipating Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom as the main antagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in both “Avengers: Doomsday” (2026) and “Avengers: Secret Wars” (2027). With this announcement, speculation about the films’ plots has already begun amongst fans, who are eagerly looking to comic books and other media for clues as to how the two-part “Avengers” saga will unfold. Although these movies are still at least two years away, fans can’t help but get excited and speculate about what’s to come!
Although fans might find inspiration from both the 1984 Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars and the 2015 Secret Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t always follow these directly but instead combines elements from various comics to create a distinctive narrative. For instance, Avengers: Infinity War borrows its title from a 1992 comic, yet its story is more influenced by the 1990 comic The Thanos Quest, 1991’s Infinity Gauntlet, and 2013’s Infinity. Given this pattern, it’s reasonable to anticipate that Loki, the first enemy The Avengers faced, will play a crucial role in Doctor Doom’s malicious plot, setting the stage for Avengers: Doomsday and potentially paving the way for Avengers: Secret Wars. In other words, Loki is likely to be pivotal to Doctor Doom’s plan in Avengers: Doomsday and could be instrumental in the build-up to Avengers: Secret Wars.
Doctor Doom Will Be on a Quest to Take Loki’s Power
The upcoming movies “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” are being promoted as the culmination of the Multiverse Storyline, since numerous projects in Phases 4 and 5 such as “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, and “Deadpool & Wolverine” have delved into the multiverse. The initial exploration of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) multiverse occurred in the series “Loki,” which premiered in 2021, with its second season airing in 2023. This series laid down many of the rules of the multiverse, such as the existence of a sacred timeline, branching realities, and the TVA’s role in overseeing these timelines. Although initially establishing Kang the Conqueror, “Loki” concluded with this threat largely resolved. In the end, Loki dedicated himself to managing the branches of the multiverse at the edge of time, reorganizing them into a tree-like structure.
In the twilight of existence, Loki, the guardian of countless universes, stands solitary. With immense power at his disposal, he plays a crucial role in preserving these diverse realities and serves as the ultimate barrier against potential dangers. Despite his apparent triumph over the multiverse, threats still linger, hinted at in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “The Marvels.”
In a possible scenario for “Avengers: Doomsday,” Doctor Doom might strive to reach the end of time, aiming to replace Loki. Given that Doctor Doom on a throne is a familiar image in Marvel comics, it’s likely they intend this pose as the defining image for “Avengers: Doomsday.”
Loki Will Fill the Role of the Molecule Man and The Beyond From the Secret Wars Comic
In several aspects, Loki might be filling the roles that were occupied by The Molecule Man and the Beyonders in the 2015 Secret Wars comic series. The Molecule Man, born from the minds of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, first appeared in Fantastic Four #20, November 1963, and has the ability to manipulate matter on a molecular level. In the Marvel universe, each universe is said to have a Molecule Man under the control of the Beyonders, an advanced cosmic alien race, who serve as potential destructive forces across different realities. Doctor Doom exploits these Molecule Men in the comics to wipe out the Beyonders, absorb their immense cosmic energy, and reshape the remaining multiverse according to his desires using the energy stored from destroyed universes. Interestingly, Loki, who is kept in a special chamber, seems to be the source of Doom’s godlike powers in this scenario.
In the MCU, Molecule Man and The Beyonders haven’t made their appearance yet, but that doesn’t pose a problem. Instead, Loki could seamlessly take on the roles initially assigned to these characters. As a cosmic entity with immense power at the edge of the universe (as seen when Doom confronts him), Loki can easily embody The Beyonders’ role. On the other hand, he can also serve as a stand-in for Molecule Man since he is the source of Victor von Doom’s power. In this storyline, Loki could be imprisoned in a chamber, allowing Thor to locate him on Battleworld and reunite with his deceased brother’s variant. This encounter would provide both Thor and Loki with the emotional resolution they need.
It’s worth mentioning that Marvel Studios has occasionally swapped roles from an existing MCU character to another for a film adaptation. For instance, in “Avengers: Infinity War,” Bruce Banner stepped into the role originally held by Silver Surfer in the comics when he warned Doctor Strange about Thanos. Similarly, although the Infinity Gauntlet storyline primarily revolved around Adam Warlock, he was only hinted at in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and didn’t physically appear until after “Avengers: Infinity War,” making his entrance in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”
The idea of an MCU character taking the role of both The Molecule Man and The Beyonders from the Secret Wars comics does not originate from us, but in fact, a Marvel star and super fan. A version of the idea originated from Iman Vellani, who starred as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. There is certainly a chance Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios listened to the superfan.
Ms. Marvel’s Iman Vellani Might Have Already Revealed the Plan
On November 10, 2023, Iman Vellani, the actress who plays Ms. Marvel, had a chat with Erik Voss on the New Rockstars YouTube channel. This conversation was arranged as part of the promotional campaign for The Marvels movie. Since the SAG-AFTRA strike was lifted when The Marvels premiered in theaters, Disney decided to promote the film after its release. During the interview, Iman talked about The Marvels and her character within the MCU, and she also shared some thoughts about what was then referred to as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. At that time, Vellani expressed her theory that Kang might assume the role of The Molecule Man from The Secret Wars comics, a being who exists in every reality. Additionally, she suggested that Kang could possess the power of The Beyonders. In her words:
As a long-time fan of comic books and alternate realities, I firmly believe that Kang could embody both the Molecule Man and The Beyonder simultaneously. My extensive exposure to various storylines has led me to this theory.
Given that Kang is no longer present, it’s plausible that Loki might assume this vacated position within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Although Iman Vellani isn’t directly involved in writing “Avengers: Doomsday” or its precursor titled “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty“, she presents a compelling argument that simplifies the narrative. In this potential scenario, Loki takes on the role of the Beyonders that Doctor Doom encounters. As various MCU heroes either attempt to reach Loki before Doom does or strive to prevent him, this plotline mirrors the structure of “Avengers: Infinity War“, where the narrative was centered around Thanos’ quest to collect all the Infinity Stones. However, in “Avengers: Doomsday”, the focus shifts from Doctor Doom hunting down Loki and usurping his position as the ruler/savior of the multiverse.
In the case of “Avengers: Secret Wars,” it’s drawing inspiration from the 2015 comic of the same name. However, for the upcoming movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday,” it appears that they may be taking elements from a different classic Doctor Doom storyline – not one found in the comics or films, but rather a video game that will turn 20 when it hits the big screen.
Avengers: Doomsday Might Adapt Marvel Ultimate Alliance
As a long-time Marvel comic book fan who grew up playing video games, I can’t help but see similarities between Doctor Doom’s potential quest for power across the Marvel Universe and the plot of the 2006 video game “Marvel Ultimate Alliance.” Having spent countless hours assembling my own teams of heroes to save the day in that game, it brings back fond memories.
Previously, Marvel Studios has taken ideas from video games, like the Hulk using car pairs as boxing gloves, similar to ‘The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction’, and Spider-Man utilizing moves from the PS4 game ‘Spider-Man’. But what’s unique here is that a video game could be providing the storyline for a change. Blending aspects from ‘Marvel Ultimate Alliance’ and the 2015 ‘Secret Wars’ would make an exciting collection of Doctor Doom-focused ‘Avengers’ movies.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the prospect of Loki playing a crucial role in Doctor Doom’s plans for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) multiverse. This connection not only streamlines characters into comic book form but also bridges the first Avengers villains we encountered with our current adversary.
