DOOM Eternal’s mod support could finally add campaign co-op

As a seasoned DOOM enthusiast with over two decades of slaying demons under my belt, I can’t help but feel like Christmas has come early! The announcement of DOOM Eternal’s mod support is nothing short of exhilarating. I remember the good old days when we used to spend hours tweaking and customizing our DOOM II levels, and now it seems that id Software is bringing that spirit back.

Four years following DOOM Eternal’s return to Earth, id Software is ready for DOOM’s first-person shooter to truly embrace its ‘eternal’ title. As fans eagerly anticipate DOOM: The Dark Ages in 2025, it seems we’ll be battling numerous Barons of Hell before then!

Debuting amidst the peak of the 2020 pandemic, DOOM Eternal amassed an impressive $450 million in sales, all without relying on microtransactions. It more than lived up to its role as a sequel to the 2016 DOOM reboot. The two-part DLC, The Ancient Gods, received widespread acclaim as well. However, truth be told, there hasn’t been much incentive for revisiting it since then.

Oh snap, maybe we can get a real co-op mode for it?

Bethesda has delighted us with an unexpected announcement: user-generated mod support for DOOM Eternal is now active! As stated by Bethesda’s Slayers Club, Update 6.66 Rev 3 for DOOM Eternal introduces the ability to delve into mod options through Steam’s beta branch.

It has been announced that Microsoft Store support for the game is expected to arrive soon, but no details about a console version have been given yet. Those who choose to participate in mod support can create their own terrifying scenarios and distribute these mods through the idStudio Beta program. If you find all of this a bit intimidating, there are numerous tutorials for idStudio available as well as an installation guide to help you get started.

Exploring the world is like opening a mysterious pearl, and although it’s possible that characters like Shrek, GTA: San Andreas’ CJ, and Thomas the Tank Engine are hiding within, the potential for mod support suggests a significant opportunity that could drastically alter our DOOM Eternal journey.

In the case of DOOM Eternal, its foray into multiplayer gaming was a minor setback, with the disliked Battlemode being criticized as a significant regression in the series. In this mode, players alternated between controlling Doomslayer and a demon, engaging in a chase around rather unremarkable levels. However, the introduction of Horde Mode was well-received later on.

Enthusiasts are already looking forward to the possibility of a multiplayer mode for DOOM Eternal’s campaign, as the 2016 version also lacked this feature. The prospect of battling Pinkies alongside friends using Plasma Rifles and other weapons is an exciting one, as it could alleviate the occasional feeling of isolation during gameplay.

In a move following QuakeCon’s announcement of a comprehensive edition that combines DOOM and DOOM II, DOOM Eternal will now offer mod support. This addition not only includes online cross-platform deathmatch but also cooperative game modes for up to 16 players. Moreover, it enables the use of community-created mods from the last 25 years! So, let your imagination run wild and scary with these new creative possibilities.
