EXCLUSIVE: Rajkummar Rao wants to play his 'inspiration' freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in future; says 'I have been fascinated'

As a dedicated follower of the Indian cinema industry, I have had the pleasure of witnessing the remarkable journey of Rajkummar Rao, a versatile actor whose talent is undeniably evident in his diverse roles. From Kai Po Che to Stree 2, Rajkummar has masterfully portrayed various characters that have not only captivated audiences but also left an indelible mark on our collective consciousness.

Rajkummar Rao, known for films like Kai Po Che, Gangs Of Wasseypur 2, Newton, Trapped, Aligarh, Omerta, Bareilly Ki Barfi, and others, is one of Bollywood’s most gifted actors. Over a career lasting more than 14 years, he has tackled diverse roles such as IAS Satyendra Mishra in Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana and lawyer Shahid Azmi in Shahid. Recently, the actor from Stree 2 expressed his fascination with India’s late freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and aims to portray him on screen in the future.

Last August, during an interview with TopMob, Rajkummar Rao mentioned that portraying Bhagat Singh is a role he deeply desires. When questioned about rumors suggesting him for a biopic based on the life of the late freedom fighter, the actor openly shared his strong interest and enthusiasm towards understanding the journey of India’s revolutionary hero.

Rajkummar mentioned that should he play a role again in the future, it would present a fresh perspective on his personal journey.

In Hindi films, performers such as Ajay Devgn, Bobby Deol, and Siddharth have taken on the role of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in previous productions.

Under the guidance of filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi, the 2002 film “The Legend of Bhagat Singh” showcased Ajay Devgn portraying the leading character. In this movie, Sushant Singh and D’Santosh played Sukhdev and Rajguru respectively.

Movies depicting Bhagat Singh’s life include “Shaheed” from 1965, “23rd March 1931: Shaheed” released in 2002, and “Rang De Basanti” from 2006. In the 1965 film, Manoj Kumar portrayed Bhagat Singh as a freedom fighter. The lead role in the 2002 movie was played by Bobby Deol.

In the 2006 movie, Aamir Khan, Soha Ali Khan, Siddharth, Sharman Joshi, and others took leading roles. Notably, Siddharth portrayed the character of Indian revolutionary Bhagat Singh under the direction of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra.

In 2017, Rajkummar Rao portrayed the character of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in the TV mini-series titled “Bose: Dead/Alive.” The show was inspired by the 2012 book “India’s Biggest Cover-up,” written by activist Anuj Dhar. The series first aired on ALTBalaji.

Alongside Rajkummar Rao, the lead actress Shraddha Kapoor is starring in Stree 2. This upcoming film is a follow-up to the 2018 release titled Stree. In addition to these main actors, Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee, and Pankaj Tripathi will also play significant roles in the movie.

In Amar Kaushik’s upcoming directorial, both Taapsee Pannu and Akshay Kumar will make brief, special appearances. Besides them, the movie features Varun Dhawan in the role of Bhasker, also known as “Bhediya”.

As a devoted follower of cinema, I’m thrilled to share that on the auspicious occasion of Independence Day, August 15, my next venture, Street 2, will grace the screens. However, it seems there’s a fierce competition ahead as it collides with Akshay Kumar’s latest release, Khel Khel Mein, and John Abraham’s movie Vedaa at the box office. The battle of the films begins!

Are you excited about Stree 2?
