As a movie enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of Disney classics from my childhood to the present day, I must say, I am absolutely thrilled by the announcement of “Mufasa: The Lion King.” Being a child of the ’90s, the original animated film holds a special place in my heart, and the live-action remake was a delightful revisit.
The king has returned at D23, with the event offering a new look at the Disney live-action prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King. Friday’s events ended with a full trailer of the movie (watch the video above), while the thousands of D23 attendees were given a private look at a scene from the movie which features Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s new song, “I Always Wanted a Brother.” According to Deadline, the song “appears in a scene where Mufasa and Scar are young cubs. They quickly become friends and, eventually, more like siblings as the song progresses and they grow into young adults.”
As a long-time fan of Disney’s “The Lion King” franchise, I am thrilled to see the upcoming live-action prequel/sequel directed by Barry Jenkins and written by Jeff Nathanson. With such an impressive cast that includes Aaron Pierre as Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka (who becomes Scar), Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki, Preston Nyman as Zazu, Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, John Kani as Rafiki, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, Donald Glover as Simba, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, I am confident that this film will deliver a captivating storyline and exceptional performances.

In the movie “The Lion King” titled “Mufasa: The Lion King,” Rafiki is tasked with sharing Mufasa’s legend to young cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala. Mufasa: The Lion King Is Due to Land in Theaters in December
Renowned for films such as Oscar-winning “Moonlight” and critically acclaimed “If Beale Street Could Talk,” director Barry Jenkins’ decision to helm “Mufasa: The Lion King” appears to be a significant shift in his filmmaking career. In an interview, Jenkins discussed his motivation behind directing the Disney movie, stating that it will serve as both a prelude and continuation of the massively successful 2019 release.
The director clarified that you’ll notice a lot of familiar characters in this production. It’s a prequel, meaning it’s set in the past, detailing how these very same characters became who they are today. In essence, we’re moving backward through time with many of these characters, even though we’re also present-day storytellers, revealing their past.
In this prequel, we’ll delve into the past of the renowned Disney villain Scar, portrayed by Kelvin Harrison Jr., who has hinted at a unique and unexpected portrayal of the character.
“We’ll learn more about Scar’s past, and he’s quite amusing! Despite his sharp edges, he’s incredibly affectionate. You’ll love meeting this young lion. It promises to be an exciting exploration of the bond between Scar and Mufasa.”
