As a tech enthusiast who’s spent countless hours behind the wheel, immersed in the pixelated worlds of AAA gaming titles, this news from Intel has sent my heart racing faster than a Ferrari on the Nürburgring!
Intel unveiled the creation of their first graphics processing unit (GPU) designed specifically for automobiles. This development was shared during Intel’s Artificial Intelligence Cockpit Innovation Event held in Shenzhen, China.
In simpler terms, this chip is a standalone Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), different from the main Central Processing Unit (CPU). It’s mainly designed to enhance graphical performance, particularly for gaming purposes – and that’s precisely what Intel aims to achieve with it.
The Intel processor is known as the “Intel Arc Graphics for Automotive,” touted to handle “graphics-intensive AAA video games.” These processors incorporate voice and facial recognition technology, which Intel refers to as their AI cockpit features, allowing users to command the vehicle verbally.
Intel intends to start selling cars equipped with discrete graphics processors (dGPUs) from next year. These vehicles will be outfitted with hardware enhancements for the chip, transforming them into portable offices and entertainment centers. With their immersive 4K displays, multi-screen configurations, and sophisticated 3D interfaces, these automobiles will provide an engaging, office-like environment.
The organization collaborates with more than a hundred software providers, boasting the creation of approximately 500 distinct applications and tools, which they’ve used to expand their Artificial Intelligence solutions.
