Lively-Reynolds Box Office Domination: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Stays No. 1 With $54M, ‘It Ends With Us’ Soars to Huge $50M

As a seasoned gamer and cinephile with a soft spot for Marvel and romantic dramas, I must say this August has been nothing short of extraordinary! The duo of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds has truly outdone themselves, creating a box office spectacle that’s hard to ignore.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have managed to generate a Barbenheimer-like impact at the cinema by releasing two distinct movies, namely Deadpool & Wolverine and The Farewell of Us.

In its third week, the Marvel Studios and Disney collaboration featuring Deadpool and Wolverine continued to dominate the North American box office, earning $54.2 million. This action-packed film has been shattering records left and right and, as of Sunday, had amassed a domestic total of approximately $494.3 million and an international total of $535.2 million, bringing its global earnings to an astounding $1.029 billion.

The movie has been a massive success for Marvel, and even more greatness lies ahead. The film is on the verge of surpassing Warner Bros.’ “Joker” to claim the position of the highest-grossing R-rated movie globally at the box office (a record it currently holds domestically).

In the second spot, Sony’s fresh release titled “It Ends With Us“, spearheaded by Lively both in front of and behind the camera, exceeded predictions with approximately $50 million in earnings, a significant leap compared to typical projections.

As the weekend approaches, predictions suggest that Colleen Hoover’s blockbuster novel adaptation could earn around $23 million at the box office. However, exhibitors are optimistic about higher earnings, estimating potential gross of up to $40 million, based on pre-sale figures. The film’s success, marked by an A-CinemaScore and a 95% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, highlights the strong desire for movies catering to female audiences.

The combination of this summer’s films has proven to be a significant success at the August box office. In comparison to the same weekend last year, total domestic earnings are anticipated to rise by approximately 35%, and even more impressively, they are expected to surpass 2019 levels by 19%. Furthermore, this is the first instance where two consecutive August films have opened with ticket sales of $50 million or above.

Approximately 84% of people buying tickets for the movie “It Ends With Us” are women, with representation from all adult age groups. Among them, around 60% fall within the age range of 18 to 34 years old, while slightly over a third (33%) are aged 35 and above. Additionally, this film shows a significant draw for a diverse ethnic audience.

In the story “It Ends With Us“, Lively portrays Lily Bloom, a resilient woman who escapes her harrowing past to start anew in Boston and achieve her long-held ambition of launching her own business. An unexpected encounter with Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni), a captivating neurosurgeon, ignites a powerful bond between them, but as they grow closer, Lily starts recognizing traits in Ryle that echo her parents’ toxic relationship. When Lily’s former lover, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), reappears, Lily’s romance with Ryle is thrown into turmoil, and she discovers the necessity of trusting her inner strength to make a difficult decision for her future.

Hoover’s first book has been chosen for its big-screen debut, with direction from Baldoni. The production cost approximately $25 million prior to marketing expenses.

While some may perceive the simultaneous release of Reynolds and Lively’s movies as a competition, insiders claim this is far from the truth. Instead, these film stars, known for their marketing genius, aimed for an instance called the “Barbenheimer moment,” where both films would simultaneously gain significant recognition in people’s minds.

Reynolds and Lively have been significantly contributing to each other’s movies, and it might not be merely a coincidence that their films were released so closely together. The release date for “It Ends With Us” was initially set for June 21, but was later moved to August 9. As the film’s producer, Lively may have had some influence in deciding the new release date.

It’s worth mentioning that it’s been 34 years since a married couple had their movies simultaneously lead the U.S. box office. In 1990, Bruce Willis’ film “Die Hard 2” continued its reign at the top in its second weekend with a gross of $14.5 million, while Demi Moore’s “Ghost” debuted in second place, earning $12.2 million on its opening weekend.

Over the weekend, another nationwide release that didn’t perform as expected was Lionsgate’s high-budget film “Borderlands,” which only managed to earn $8.8 million in its opening weekend. This was below initial expectations and despite a star-packed cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Ariana Greenblatt, and Florian Munteanu.

Under the direction of Eli Roth, the movie adaptation of the video game, estimated to have cost over $110 million for production, received harsh criticism from critics and audiences alike, earning a D+ rating in screenplay. According to Lionsgate insiders, the studio aims to reduce its losses by selling off international distribution rights.
