It Ends with Us vs. Billion-Dollar Deadpool & Wolverine at Box Office

It Ends with Us vs. Billion-Dollar Deadpool & Wolverine at Box Office

As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of movie-going experience under my belt, I must say that this weekend’s box office has left me both thrilled and perplexed. On one hand, it’s heartwarming to see Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds’ films, It Ends with Us and Deadpool & Wolverine, respectively, taking the top two spots. Their on-screen rivalry has certainly spilled over into reality in a delightfully entertaining fashion.

As a movie enthusiast, I wasn’t surprised that Deadpool, my wise-cracking partner, snatched the top spot again! Despite Blake’s heartfelt drama, “It Ends with Us,” putting up a solid fight, it had to settle for second place this weekend, earning an estimated $50 million domestically (according to The Numbers). On the other hand, my movie with Wolverine continues its reign, bagging $54.2 million for the third week in a row.

The blockbuster from the Marvel Cinematic Universe has now surpassed the billion-dollar mark (according to Deadline) with a total of $1,029.5 million earned globally. As previously mentioned by MovieWeb, Todd Phillips’ film “Joker” (released in 2019) currently holds the title for the highest-grossing R-rated movie worldwide with $1.078 billion, but this record is expected to be broken shortly by “Deadpool and Wolverine”.

Although critics gave the romantic drama “It Ends with Us” a Tomatometer score of just 59% due to their harsh reviews, director and star Justin Baldoni’s film found favor with moviegoers. The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes stands at 94%, while its “A-” CinemaScore is nearly as high as the “A” rating received by Deadpool & Wolverine.

On its debut day last weekend (August 9), the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel “It Ends with Us” had a strong start and even surpassed the combined performances of Deadpool and Wolverine, earning an impressive $24 million on Friday. In contrast, Deadpool managed to make only $15.7 million that day.

On Saturdays and Sundays, it was Deadpool and Wolverine who dominated with impressive earnings of $21.7 million and $16.8 million respectively. In contrast, It Ends with Us found itself playing catch-up, earning $13.7 million and $12.1 million on the same days in a fierce competition against each other.

Borderlands Crashes & Burns During Debut

The weekend’s box office contest between Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds proved to be a success for both, as their films Deadpool and It Ends with Us claimed the top two positions. However, the film adaptation of the popular Borderlands video game series faced significant challenges, earning an estimated $8.8 million against a reported budget of $100 million (according to Screen Rant). In simpler terms, while Lively and Reynolds’ projects performed well, the Borderlands movie underperformed, especially considering its high production costs.

The movie “Borderlands,” boasting a stellar cast that includes names like Kate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, was heavily criticized by reviewers. This harsh criticism led to a dismal Tomatometer rating of only 10% for the film. Audiences also seemed to struggle with its adaptation from video game to the big screen. Currently, “Borderlands” has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 50%, and its CinemaScore of “D+” is quite poor.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve got to say that the reigning champion, last week’s number one film, has maintained its dominance for a third consecutive week at the box office. Meanwhile, “It Ends with Us” had to settle for the runner-up position. Interestingly, Glen Powell’s “Twisters” has been hanging on like a persistent tropical depression, managing to secure the No. 3 spot with an impressive $15 million earnings this week. The action-packed “Borderlands” slid into fourth place, and “Despicable Me 4” closed out the Top 5 with a respectable $8 million.

NEON’s movie titled “Cuckoo” ranks ninth in the Top 10 during its debut weekend with earnings of $3 million. Meanwhile, Nicolas Cage’s horror film for the company remains a hit among audiences. The tenth spot is taken by “Longlegs” with $2 million. The weekend’s highest per-theater average goes to the romantic drama “It Ends with Us ” ($13,847).

On August 16th, the alien film “Romulus” enters the summer movie lineup. Meanwhile, starting a day earlier on August 15th, special 15-year anniversary screenings of the beloved animated film “Coraline” will kick off.
