Original Pokmon Star Rachael Lillis Dies at 46

As a devoted fan who grew up with the enchanting melodies and captivating characters brought to life by Rachael Lillis, I am profoundly saddened by her untimely departure from our world. Her voice was not just a soundtrack to my childhood, but a comforting companion that guided me through countless adventures in the magical realm of Pokémon.

On August 10, 2024, Rachael Lillis, a renowned voice actress recognized chiefly for her work in the Pokémon series, succumbed to breast cancer at the age of 46. As reported by Kotaku, Lillis was instrumental in the Pokémon franchise, lending her voice to beloved characters such as Misty, Team Rocket’s Jessie, and numerous Pokémon themselves, including cherished figures like Jigglypuff, Vulpix, and Gold. Veronica Taylor, the original Ash Ketchum voice actress on Pokémon, announced Lillis’ passing via social media. The complete message can be found below:

“With a deep sense of sadness, I’m compelled to announce the tragic passing of Rachael Lillis on August 10, 2024. She was an extraordinary artist, her voice a beacon that illuminated every performance, whether she was speaking or singing. Her legacy will live on through the countless animated roles she graced, most notably as ‘Pokemon’s’ Misty and Jessie, characters we all adored. Rachael was incredibly grateful for the outpouring of love and support she received during her battle with cancer. It meant the world to her, truly making a difference. Her family asks for privacy during this difficult time as they mourn. A memorial service will be held at a later date.”

Rachael Lillis, whom we all know for her exceptional roles, brought joy to our Saturday mornings and filled our pre- and post-school hours with her enchanting voice, hilarious timing, and superb acting talents. I was fortunate enough to call her a friend. Her boundless kindness and empathy never wavered until the very end. She had a knack for humor, was delightful to be around, incredibly intelligent, and possessed an amazing memory. She worked tirelessly and showed genuine care. It’s hard to imagine how we’ll fill this vast emptiness now that her light has gone out. Like the Perseid meteor shower, Rachael was a breathtaking spectacle and truly unique. Her brilliance faded too quickly. Her memory will endure in our hearts forever.

Lillis’ struggle with cancer became public knowledge in May 2024, and since January of the same year, she had been residing in a nursing home due to the cancer spreading to her spine. Her devoted fans mobilized and collected more than $96,000 through a GoFundMe page established by her sister, Laurie Orr, to cover her medical expenses and in-home care. Laurie Orr confirmed Lillis’ passing on the GoFundMe platform, expressing that she passed away peacefully and free from pain.

A Pokémon Legend

Rachel Lillis started her voice acting career in the ’90s, but she’s particularly recognized for her work on Pokémon. She was part of the team that dubbed the series for English-speaking audiences from its very start. Not only did she provide voices for the Pokémon anime, but she also voiced nine Pokémon movies, such as the trilogy of “Pokémon: The First Movie” (1999), “Pokémon 2000,” and “Pokémon 3: Spell of Unknown” (2001).

Lillis’ demise is deeply felt by both Pokemon enthusiasts and the voice-acting fraternity. Through her exceptional portrayal, Lillis elevated Misty, initially a mere Water Gym boss in video games, to a beloved character among fans. Her role as Jessie significantly enhanced Team Rocket from a typical villain duo on Pokemon to a humorous force nearly as popular as the protagonists themselves. Her vocal performances, notably those of Jigglypuff, continue to resonate today in the widely-played Super Smash Bros video games and Pokemon: Detective Pikachu. Although she is no longer with us, her impact will persist in the minds and hearts of fans who eagerly watched Pokemon every Saturday morning. The voice talent Lillis displayed has left a lasting impression on an entire generation who will dearly miss her.

Our thoughts go out to Rachael Lillis’ family and friends.

Rest in Peace. Rachael Lillis: July 8, 1978, to August 10, 2024.
