When Karan Johar revealed Sridevi was supposed to play Madhuri Dixit's role in Kalank; 'It was my big dream to work with her'

Reflecting on the 61st birth anniversary of the legendary Sridevi, I find myself reminiscing about the magic she brought to the silver screen and the indelible impact she left behind. As a lifestyle expert who has spent decades immersed in the world of cinema, I can confidently assert that Sridevi’s absence is truly felt, not just by her fans but also by those who had the privilege of working with her.

On August 13, 2024, I can’t help but be consumed by nostalgia as we celebrate what would have been Sridevi’s 61st birthday. Although she is no longer physically with us, her spirit remains ever-present in our hearts. To honor this special day, let me take you back to a fascinating moment when Karan Johar unveiled that none other than the legendary Sridevi was his first pick for Madhuri Dixit’s role in Kalank. The filmmaker also shared his dream of collaborating with Sridevi and emphasized that Madhuri held immense respect for the Mom actress, acknowledging her exceptional talent.

During an interaction at the Sridevi: The Eternal Screen Goddess book launch, Karan Johar revealed that Sridevi was supposed to play the role of Madhuri Dixit’s role in Kalank. The character was Bahaar Begum.

In her conversation, KJo revealed that Sridevi had consented to take on the part and was preparing for it. This role was that of a chief courtesan in a specific region, and the storyline also included an illegitimate son for her character. Moreover, she was set to perform one significant song in the movie.

Karan stated, “Working with her had always been my grand ambition. We conducted numerous sessions, but sadly, she passed away in February while our project was about to start in April. Afterward, no decisions were made for a month, and then we approached Madhuri.”

In his praise for Dixit, the director expressed that she was not just a colleague or contemporary to Sridevi, but he believed as an actress, Dixit admired and respected the artistry and talent of Sridevi deeply. He further added that it was her way of honoring Sridevi’s legacy by paying tribute to her in this manner. (KJo said this.)

In the year 2019, the movie “Kalank” hit the screens, graced by the presence of stars like Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur, Kiara Advani, and others.

Janhvi Kapoor shared a heartfelt tribute to her mom Sridevi on Instagram, posting a series of photos. She first shared a picture of the steps leading up to the Tirumala Tirupati Temple and then a charming childhood photo with her mother. The post ended with an endearing snap taken at the same temple in Andhra Pradesh.

In the latest photo, Janhvi is pictured in a vibrant yellow-green traditional silk saree, complete with a floral blouse. She added a kamarbandh and complemented her outfit with jhumkas and necklace that matched. Her hair was styled in a bun with a central parting. The caption of the post reads, “Happy birthday, Mumma (with a heart emoji). I love you.”

Khushi Kapoor and Boney Kapoor posted touching photos, reminiscing about the deceased actress they knew.
