Candace Cameron Bure Recalls “Awkward” Experience of Filming ‘Full House’ Episode Focused on Her Weight

As a seasoned gamer with a heart for the ’90s sitcom era, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of empathy towards these two talented actresses – Candace Cameron Bure and Danielle Fishel. Growing up in front of millions, their lives were under constant scrutiny, and their experiences highlight the darker side of fame that we often overlook.

Candace Cameron Bure shared insights on her emotions during the making of the ‘Full House’ episode focusing on her character D.J. Tanner’s weight concerns.

In an episode of the “Pod Meets World” rewatch podcast, Bure shared her unusual experience growing up as a cast member on the TV show “Boy Meets World.” She confessed that it was particularly challenging for her when viewers paid close attention to her physical appearance at the ages of 15 and 16.

“She remarked, ‘I’ve always been known for my plump cheeks, and many found that endearing. Looking back, I realize I was just an ordinary girl. Strangely, when I meet others now, they often comment on how much slimmer I appear in real life.’ This made the actress from ‘Full House’ ponder if this is all people perceive.”

“Indeed, during my teenage years, I couldn’t help but feel insecure, whether on TV or not. But when I was on television, that insecurity just grew larger, making those years a tad more awkward for me. Looking back, I often find myself wishing to go back in time and give my younger self a warm hug, whispering words of encouragement: ‘Ignore the noise around you.'”

As Danielle Fishel inquired if any episode of “Full House” tackled my weight issues similar to her experience on “Boy Meets World,” I reminisced about the season four installment, “Shape Up.” In this episode, my character D.J. hesitated to don a bathing suit for a pool party, so she embarked on a strict diet for a week to shed pounds. However, her efforts resulted in fainting at the gym due to improper nourishment.

Bure told Fishel that the show’s creators had discussed the episode with her and her family to ensure she was at ease. She said, “I agreed, but performing it felt a bit awkward.” The actress further mentioned that she shed approximately 20 pounds between one season and the next. The producers found this impressive and decided to add a scene in the opening credits where she’s riding an exercise bike, mainly to highlight her fitness journey.

Later on, Fishel opened up about her personal encounter with the “Boy Meets World” storyline involving her weight increase. Unlike Bure’s case, the producers didn’t inquire if she was comfortable with this plot development. As Fishel put it, “When they summoned me to their office to inform me of this storyline addition, it wasn’t exactly a question.” She mentioned that her physical transformation wasn’t significant. “I had noticed my weight gain, but I was still a size four,” she added. The episode titled “She’s Having My Baby Back Ribs” also touched upon the weight gain of her former cast member and co-host on “Girl Meets World”, Will Friedle.

As a gamer, I can’t forget the moment when I thought, “Wow, these developers dedicated an entire game level to my weight gain! It’s almost as if they’ve noticed a shift in my virtual physique.” At the time, I had no choice but to accept it since they didn’t offer any other options. Even if they did, I don’t think I would have felt at ease refusing, saying something like, “No, I don’t want to go through that weight gain storyline.”
