Modern Family’s Julie Bowen Gets Real About How ‘Disappointing’ It Was When The Press Tried To Pit Her And Sofia Vergara Against Each Other

As a devoted fan who has grown up watching some of the most iconic sitcoms, I can confidently say that Modern Family holds a special place in my heart. The show, despite being off the air for a couple of years now, continues to resonate with viewers thanks to its relatable portrayal of family dynamics and the brilliant chemistry between its cast members.

Despite no longer being on TV since 2020, “Modern Family” continues to stand out as one of the greatest sitcoms ever made. Its enduring appeal lies in its ability to portray family dynamics that resonated with viewers, as they followed the lives of this unique family from one episode to another. When Julie Bowen recently looked back on her time working on ABC’s “Modern Family,” she remembered how the media often compared her to her co-star Sofia Vergara, but emphasized that their off-screen relationship was vastly different from the on-screen rivalry.

On the latest episode of the “I Choose Me With Jennie Garth” podcast, Bowen and Jennie Garth discussed instances where the media fostered rivalry among women. In response to this topic on “Modern Family”, here’s what she had to say:

In a show like Modern Family, I found myself often compared to Sofia, much like Betty and Veronica are in the comic books. It seems they’ve done the same thing with you and Shannen Doherty. I recall it vividly; I remember seeing you two on a morning talk show, shopping or doing some similar activity. And I thought, ‘They’re just friends!’ The media doesn’t always give us an accurate portrayal of real life.

I’d find myself strolling through the supermarket aisles, and there we’d be – my mug next to Sofia Vergara’s in a glossy mag at the checkout counter. It struck me then, in that moment, how surreal it felt to be portrayed as rivals.

They seemed intent on creating conflict between us, as if we were enemies. It’s that limited perspective that only one woman can truly thrive or be content at a time. But I replied, ‘Oh, no. I admire Sofía, and I appreciate the unique qualities she possesses. She is witty, modest, bold, passionate about life, dance, and cake – just to name a few things.’ … And I gained so much insight from her presence on what it takes to be a strong, self-assured woman who embodies her own identity.

The public discourse about Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara might have circulated rapidly among people who weren’t acquainted with them personally, as they frequently competed against each other for Emmys and other awards during their time on Modern Family. Interestingly, both actresses were nominated four times for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series, with Bowen winning twice in instances where she bested Vergara. In an interview on a podcast, Bowen revealed that despite their occasional differences, they had a good working relationship on set. She also expressed the sentiment that they were often perceived as rivals, a notion stemming from the belief that two women can’t both succeed in one project simultaneously.

I found that to be really disappointing on the part of the press, but I just never fed into that. That’s a scarcity mindset, and there’s no such thing as, like, ‘Oh, if one woman’s doing well, that means others have to step back.’ I can’t support that.

While Bowen has more Emmys than Vergara, it’s essential to note that the difference is mainly due to the voting system rather than their acting skills. Interestingly, Vergara managed to secure a place among the nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie for her role in “Griselda,” making her the first Latin actress ever nominated in that specific category.

Beyond Emmy awards and gossip columns, it appears that the Modern Family cast truly acts like a family off-screen too. They spontaneously gather together, such as when Bowen inserted a humorous Taylor Swift reference in response to Vergara’s split from Joe Manganiello. It’s hard to imagine any of the Modern Family cast not belonging on this show, making it all the more surprising that Bowen initially declined the series offer.

Currently, you have the opportunity to enjoy “Modern Family” by subscribing to Peacock, followed by eager anticipation for their new series, “Hysteria!”, set to debut on Peacock on October 18th.
