As a long-time Hellboy fan who grew up with Mike Mignola’s dark and gripping comics, I have to say that the anticipation for this new movie, “Hellboy: The Crooked Man“, has me on the edge of my seat. After the disappointment of the 2019 reboot, it’s refreshing to hear director Brian Taylor’s commitment to creating a standalone piece of art rather than a mere rehash or sequel.
As per director Brian Taylor, the upcoming Hellboy film titled “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” deviates significantly from previous adaptations of the popular comic book character. Unlike the two films directed by Guillermo del Toro that starred Ron Perlman as the muscular, red-skinned detective in “Hellboy” and “Hellboy II: The Golden Army”, and the 2019 reboot featuring David Harbour, this new version should not be compared to its predecessors due to a significant difference.
According to Brian Taylor, speaking with Total Film, Guillermo del Toro and Neil Marshall’s versions of Hellboy deviated significantly from the character depicted in Mike Mignola’s cherished comics. However, the latest version portrayed by David Harbour, as confirmed by Mignola himself, is the most accurate adaptation yet. The director further added that terms like ‘reboot’ and ‘remake’ diminish the unique artistic value of a film, as they suggest connections to a larger franchise. He elaborated:
“Rather than viewing it as a reboot or a new series, we’re focused on creating a film that can stand independently. We don’t want to produce an imitation of Guillermo del Toro’s $100-million movie. Instead, this is a return to the early days of Hellboy, where he was more like a plumber dealing with supernatural issues. He’s a wandering, sarcastic, soulful character who smokes and often finds himself in the midst of strange happenings and hauntings. If the director feels that his character is authentically portrayed for the first time, then we believe we’ve achieved our goal.”
In addition to delving into Neil Marshall’s innovative approach to Hellboy, Total Film has unveiled fresh photos showcasing Jack Kesy in the role of the cherished demonic protagonist. These images provide us with the most detailed glimpse of the character so far.
Kesy’s makeup and prosthetics have been revealed earlier – in first glimpses and trailers. Yet, the latest photos emphasize the film’s ominous mood with a black-and-white color scheme, providing a closer inspection of the remarkable craftsmanship dedicated to reviving Hellboy once more.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man Is a Folk Horror Movie
In Hellboy: The Crooked Man, a new actor takes on the role of the legendary character, but what sets this movie apart is its focus on horror, something that’s long been associated with Mike Mignola’s “Hellboy” comics. Drawing inspiration from the comic book series of the same name, The Crooked Man will bring to life one of Mignola’s most fearsome creatures – the eponymous Crooked Man. The makers are making a conscious effort to delve into the chilling and unsettling aspects of the comics, as evidenced by the first trailer for Hellboy: The Crooked Man, which highlights the gruesome body horror and the terrifying folklore villain present in the film.
In the 1950s, the story “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” unfolds when Hellboy, our title character, arrives in a small town located in Appalachia, Virginia. He’s on a mission to lift a witch’s curse from a young woman, but encounters The Crooked Man, a minion of the Devil. Along with actor John Kasy, “The Crooked Man” features Adeline Rudolph, Leah McNamara, Martin Bassindale, Jefferson White, Joseph Marcell, and Hannah Margetson on its star-studded cast.
