As a seasoned gamer with a decade-long obsession with the X-Men universe, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when it comes to Channing Tatum‘s Gambit. The saga behind his movie has been as tumultuous as the mutant himself, and much like Magneto, I too have felt the sting of a dream deferred. Yet, there’s still hope that one day, we’ll see our favorite Cajun card-slinger back on the big screen.

The behind-the-scenes story of Channing Tatum’s “Gambit” movie is quite heartbreaking. The project had been stuck in development hell for years, and just as it was about to go ahead and begin development, Disney acquired Fox and put it on ice. The merger robbed superhero fans of a potentially great movie about the card-wielding mutant, and Tatum never got to make his dream project. However, the actor still hopes to star in a film about the Cajun mutant, and he’s joked about going to extreme lengths to make it happen.

On “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Tatum humorously said, “I’d go so far as to harm kittens… I’d do all sorts of atrocious acts to make it happen.” However, it’s evident that he was using hyperbole, but his eagerness for this project to take off is undeniable.

It remains to be seen if Tatum will lead his own “Gambit” film, but at least he had a chance to embody the character within the Marvel Universe. In the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Tatum’s Gambit joins forces with X-23 (Dafne Keen), Blade (Wesley Snipes), and Elektra (Jennifer Garner) against Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin) and her minions in The Void. Despite this, he maintains a sense of hope that he’ll get to reprise the role in the future, as “Deadpool & Wolverine” hints at potential additional Gambit appearances within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Channing Tatum hopes to play Gambit again in the MCU

One scene after the credits in “Deadpool & Wolverine” has Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, going to the Time Variance Authority to demonstrate that Johnny Storm (Chris Evans) uses inappropriate language. Some viewers may have noticed Gambit on a monitor too, implying he survived his battle against Cassandra Nova’s gang in The Void. During an interview with Collider, Channing Tatum expressed his belief that Gambit is still alive, but it depends on Marvel to determine if they want to proceed with the popular X-Man’s film storyline further.

“You never know. I mean, literally, I could never be in another Marvel movie again, and it wouldn’t surprise me because I’ve had it in my hand before, and it’s gone away,” Tatum said. “I’m always grain-of-salting it, but I’m hoping that Kevin [Feige] will allow me in.”

Luckily, I’ve always been fond of the character, Gambit. During my chat with Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show,” Channing Tatum mentioned a discussion he had with Marvel’s Feige regarding Gambit’s role in the MCU. Feige expressed his affection for the character but admitted that he needs time to strategize Gambit’s position within the universe, which isn’t necessarily a no. The silver lining is that the success of “Deadpool & Wolverine” has opened up a possible route for Gambit, and Channing gives Ryan Reynolds credit for making it happen.

Ryan Reynolds saved Gambit

Ryan Reynolds, who poured his heart into making “Deadpool,” likely understands Channing Tatum’s fervent wish to portray Gambit. This might explain why Reynolds leveraged his influence to include Gambit in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” However, regardless of the reasons, Tatum has acknowledged Reynolds for keeping his dream alive. In a chat with Jimmy Fallon, Tatum disclosed that Reynolds suggested putting the laid-back Southern mutant in the “Deadpool 3” cast. Additionally, he’s been quite open about expressing gratitude towards Reynolds on social media.

Tatum shared on Instagram how he initially thought he’d lost Gambit forever, but their collaboration was so meaningful that he can hardly imagine reciprocating the favor. He expressed his deep gratitude, acknowledging the profound impact this experience had on him and reaffirmed his affection for Gambit.

Simultaneously, Reynolds expresses his wish for Tatum to have future chances to portray Gambit. He has also suggested he might play Deadpool if that film ever materializes, leaving the decision in the hands of Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios. They’ll need to approve the project and make both sides content.
