Christina Aguilera Knows People Have Opinions About Her Weight. She Doesn't 'Give A F---'

As a longtime fan of Christina Aguilera, it’s heartening to witness the evolution and growth she’s undergone over the past 25 years. From her debut as an 18-year-old pop sensation to her current role as a mother of two and a beacon of self-love, she continues to inspire countless individuals around the world.

25 years ago, Christina Aguilera’s debut single “Genie In The Bottle” made its way onto radio stations, becoming one of the most catchy tunes of 1999 and the Y2K period (a trend that celebrities like Jessica Biel are currently fond of). Not only has Aguilera maintained her status as a worldwide pop sensation, but she’s also grown into a 43-year-old mother of two who has developed a newfound understanding about dealing with scrutiny and opinions regarding her personal life and body.

At the start of her career, Aguilera made a splash with her debut album at the age of 18. She was recognized for donning midriff-exposing crop tops and low-rise jeans, fashion choices that were frequently spotted in popular teen movies from the 2000s. Over time, as her body naturally evolved under public scrutiny, she experienced criticism. In a recent conversation with Glamour, she opened up about this backlash.

As you transition from being a teenager into your twenties, you’ll notice significant changes in your physical form. Initially, I began to develop more, only to find it unwelcome since it seemed like, ‘Oh, she’s gaining weight.’ However, industry figures often commented on my physique and persona during my teenage years when I was slimmer.

In the early 2000s, tabloids often portrayed women like Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff, and Jessica Simpson as “fat” or criticized their cellulite. However, in recent times, these stars have embraced their bodies confidently. For example, Hilary Duff posed naked for Women’s Health magazine in 2022 and expressed her pride in her body after having three children.

In that era, making comments about women’s physical appearances was considered socially acceptable, but it was deeply damaging for many women. Nowadays, we are increasingly re-evaluating this period, frequently highlighting such instances in popular films as an illustration of our reflections.

In the past, movies like “Bridget Jones Diary” (2001) and “The Devil Wears Prada” depicted characters struggling with being overweight for their sizes, much like we did. And remember Anne Hathaway’s character in “The Devil Wears Prada”? Yeah, that was us. Christina Aguilera has opened up about her struggles with body image during her early pop star years when she hated being “super skinny.” Despite criticism due to normal body changes, she embraced filling out during her twenties. Here’s how she handles other people’s opinions on her weight today:

I’ve reached a point in life where I no longer worry about your thoughts or opinions towards me. I won’t let them influence me, and it’s for you to manage how you perceive and interact with me. My actions and being are my own concern, not something to be judged by others.

2020 saw Christina Aguilera celebrating her 40th birthday with a defiant gesture, and the singer has since maintained an unperturbed attitude towards public opinions about her. In a recent interview, she expressed that at this stage of her life, she identifies as a person first and foremost, rather than a celebrity. Currently, Aguilera is prioritizing her two children, aged 16 and 10, who are now at the same age she was when she joined the Mickey Mouse Club before becoming a pop star. Reflecting on parenthood, she described it as experiencing life all over again.

Despite devoting much of her time to her personal life, Aguilera hinted at the release of her first English-language album in more than six years (her last being the 2012 Spanish-language record “Aguilera”). We’re thrilled to see how this phase of her life has inspired her and eagerly anticipate the songs she’ll share from this unique period.
