New leak claims to show Insomniac's Wolverine - and it's running on Steam Deck

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must admit that the gaming landscape has evolved significantly over the years. From the pixelated, blocky worlds of the 90s to the hyper-realistic, immersive experiences we have today, it’s been quite a journey.

As a diehard fan, it seems like Insomniac Games is constantly navigating through unexpected challenges. The recent ransomware attack unfortunately exposed their blueprints for possible Spider-Man and X-Men projects. Since then, there’s been an unrelenting drip of leaks hinting at the development of a Wolverine game.

After Rocksteady Studios demonstrated how to create an exceptional superhero game through the Arkham trilogy, Insomniac incorporated aspects of that design and allowed Marvel to have its moment in the spotlight with the release of 2018’s Spider-Man. Following the original game and 2020’s Miles Morales, 2024’s Spider-Man 2 carried on the series’ legacy by delivering another top-selling PlayStation exclusive.

Although Marvel’s Wolverine was unveiled during the 2021 PlayStation showcase, there’s no evidence of its release yet. It’s puzzling that only one cinematic trailer has been shown, and with Insomniac Games being tight-lipped about gameplay footage, leakers have stepped in to fill the gap.

The Insomniac assault was exceptionally harsh on Wolverine, as early drafts of scenes and entire stages were leaked online prematurely. Recently, Reddit user u/LongJonSilver demonstrated a less polished version running on the Steam Deck. Despite its appearance reminiscent of PS One games, it appears to be the genuine article.

There’s an impressive roster of wardrobe choices, showing off the fan-favourite “Patch” tux from the comics, an Insomniac suit, and Weapon-X homage. We then dive straight into action, with all that typical Insomniac gameplay you’ll recognise from the Spider-Man games. It ends during a fight with what looks like Lady Deathstrike.

In this new version of the game by Insomniac, players are appreciating the traversal feature more, as Logan seems to be using his retractable claws to climb buildings rather than relying on Spider-Man’s web shooters. It remains uncertain how his regenerative powers will be implemented, but with the menacing appearance of his unsheathed claws, it promises a more mature and intense gaming experience.

While it doesn’t reveal anything groundbreaking, it offers a more detailed perspective on how Wolverine might be developed. Key plot points are accessible online if you know where to find them, but like Spider-Man paved the way for the Marvel Gaming Universe with references to Doctor Strange and Daredevil, anticipate that Wolverine will lay the foundation for the X-Men in a similar manner.

Given that the Steam Deck can handle both Spider-Man and its sequel, there’s optimism about eventually playing Wolverine on this handheld device. Since these games initially appeared on PlayStation before coming to PC (making them playable via Steam), a Wolverine release date has yet to be announced, so the prospect of it being released on Steam is even more distant.
