As a seasoned crypto investor and Airbnb host myself, I can empathize with Ashley’s predicament. I remember my early days when mining was a hobby, not realizing the potential financial goldmine it could become. However, turning my humble abode into an unauthorized Bitcoin farm was certainly not part of the hosting agreement!
A host on Airbnb implemented a unique, recently-enacted regulation following the discovery that some of her guests were secretly engaging in cryptocurrency mining at her residence.
Ashley, the host, posted on TikTok that her visitors had left the house spotless and earned a top rating. Yet, she was taken aback when she got a $1,500 electricity bill.
After examining recordings from her outdoor security cameras, Ashley observed that the visitors had carried more than ten computer workstations and established an improvised electric car charging facility.
Following communication with them and presenting proof, it was confessed that they had been mining cryptocurrency throughout their almost four-week visit, allegedly amassing more than $100,000 in earnings.
No more crypto mining!
At first, Ashley found it difficult to make the guests pay their bills, but Airbnb stepped in to resolve the issue and guarantee the payment. After this occurrence, she amended her house rules to include “no cryptocurrency mining” and “no electric vehicle charging”.
Many other Airbnb hosts have taken comparable steps as a reaction to the energy-consuming characteristics of cryptocurrency mining, a process that’s infamous for its high electricity usage.
As a crypto investor, I recently shared on TikTok that it’s more cost-effective for me to lease a home instead of shouldering the high electricity bills.
