Zack Snyders Watchmen Gets High Praise From Star of New Animated Adaptation

As a long-time fan of both comic books and the silver screen, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing some truly remarkable adaptations throughout my years. Among these, Zack Snyder’s 2009 film adaptation of Watchmen stands tall as one of my all-time favorites. So when I heard that Katee Sackhoff, a phenomenal actress I first came to admire in Battlestar Galactica, was voicing Laurie Juspeczyk in the new animated adaptation, I was beyond thrilled!

Actress Katee Sackhoff, known for her role in Battlestar Galactica, expressed her admiration and affection towards the 2009 film directed by Zack Snyder when discussing her involvement in the new animated adaptation of Watchmen. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Sackhoff praised Snyder’s version as “phenomenal,” and she believes that this latest interpretation stays true to the original graphic novel, a sentiment she thinks fans will share.

“I adored it! It’s a significant reason I embarked on this journey as it stirred my creativity and ignited a spark within me. It set my mind racing, like gears starting to turn. For readers of the book, this feels authentic, true to the narrative. I believe that’s what will captivate people – their appreciation for it will be immense, and they’ll truly savor this experience.”

Actress Sackhoff discussed her portrayal in the animated film, emphasizing the fresh vulnerability she brought to Laurie Juspeczyk. Comparing her character to Poison Ivy from “Batman: The Long Halloween,” she described her as a misunderstood figure. For Sackhoff, conveying feelings of anger and pain was essential in her performance, serving as a bridge between herself and the character. In her own words:

“Laurie, I think, has a lot of self-doubt, a lot of vulnerability, a lot of pain. I think that that was something that I really wanted to sort of hold on to for her, and make that her through line. I have been in a situation where I loved somebody with all my heart and didn’t feel like I was enough, and that’s an awful feeling. It’s a terrible, terrible feeling. And, and so I held on to that, that was my thing with her. That was the thing that I kept coming home to. And I think that you hear it in her voice a lot.

Actress Sackhoff has a background in voice acting, having portrayed Bo-Katan Kryze in both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and its sequel, Star Wars: Rebels. Moreover, she reprised her role for the live-action adaptation of her character in the popular Disney+ series, The Mandalorian.

The graphic novel “Watchmen,” published by DC Comics, is widely regarded as one of the greatest comic books ever created. Originally written by Alan Moore in 1986-87 with illustrations by Dave Gibbons, this masterpiece has been adapted twice before – first through Zack Snyder’s critically acclaimed film “Watchmen” (2009) and later by the HBO series that shared the same name in 2019. Both adaptations were set 34 years after the original comics, and they received a lot of positive feedback. A new animated R-rated film is now attempting to bring the comic to life again, set in a world where costumed superheroes are illegal. However, opinions among viewers have been mixed about this latest adaptation, with some questioning whether the series should be left untouched.

The trailer for the upcoming project was debuted in July, garnering a mix of opinions from enthusiasts. Starring alongside Sackhoff is an illustrious voice cast, comprising Titus Welliver as Rorschach, Matthew Rhys as Nite Owl, Michael Cerveris as Doctor Manhattan, and Troy Baker as Ozymandias. Additional characters will be brought to life by Jeffrey Combs, Kelly Hu, Adrienne Barbeau, Corey Burton, and Phil LaMarr.

Under the guidance of director Brandon Vietti and based on a script by J. Michael Straczynski, this fresh animated movie is being distributed by Warner Bros and Paramount. Straczynski, much like Sackhoff, expressed his thoughts online, stating that he felt no need to write additional content or modify what’s effective in the book. He described it as “pure Moore”, suggesting that this adaptation might be one of the most faithful comic interpretations yet.

As a seasoned screenwriter with years of experience under my belt, I have been fortunate enough to adapt some truly iconic works for the big screen. In this case, I was given the incredible opportunity to adapt the groundbreaking graphic novel “Watchmen” for Warner Bros. Animation. For me, adapting a project isn’t just about rehashing the story or changing it beyond recognition; instead, it’s about preserving the essence of the original work while carefully shaping it into a cinematic experience that resonates with audiences. With “Watchmen,” I chose to focus on configuring the structure of the story in a way that would work best for a movie, rather than adding new material or altering what already works so well in the book. The result is a film that stays true to Alan Moore’s vision and remains “pure Moore” for fans of the source material. It was an honor to be a part of bringing this classic story to life on screen.

In simpler terms, “Chapter I of Watchmen” will become available digitally on August 13, followed by its 4K and Blu-Ray release on August 27. “Chapter II of Watchmen” is scheduled for a later release this year.
