Skydance, ‘Jurassic World’ Scribe Derek Connolly Tackling Sega’s ‘Eternal Champions’ (Exclusive)

As a long-time fan of video games and blockbuster movies, I can hardly contain my excitement about Derek Connolly being tapped to write the live-action adaptation of Sega’s Eternal Champions! His experience with franchise storytelling, particularly his work on Jurassic World, makes him the perfect choice to breathe life into this iconic fighting game.

Writer Derek Connolly, known for his scripts on the Jurassic World film series, has been selected to pen a live-action version of the Sega video game Eternal Champions, produced by Skydance.

David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger are set to produce movies for Skydance Media, while Toru Nakahara, who has been in charge of adapting Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog series, will produce projects on behalf of the video game company.

First introduced in 1993, the game titled Eternal Champions was created and distributed by Sega for the Sega Genesis gaming system. The idea behind it is as follows: To alter Earth’s grim future, an entity called the Eternal Champion summons the spirits of influential individuals from various points in history, people who were poised for greatness but never got the chance to fulfill their potential due to their untimely deaths. These figures are thrust into a tournament of champions where the victor is resurrected and becomes the champion Earth needs to reestablish balance, while the others are sent back to moments just before their demise.

The game received high acclaim for its diverse array of characters, spanning various time periods. These included Blade, a Syrian bounty hunter from the year 2030, Larcen, a cat burglar hailing from the 1920s, Slash, a hunter dating back to 50,000 BC, and Jetta, a Russian noblewoman disguised as an acrobat at the dawn of the 20th century.

Rob Ree, who’s known for facilitating the collaboration between Skydance and Sega, is serving as the executive producer. Meanwhile, Aimee Rivera will be in charge of supervising the project for Skydance.

Connolly made a breakthrough when he collaborated on the script for “Safety Not Guaranteed” with Colin Trevorrow, receiving the Independent Spirit Award for best first screenplay in 2013 and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance in 2012.

Ever since then, he’s become known as a reliable scriptwriter for various franchises, whether they revolve around dinosaurs or Jedi knights. He collaborated with Trevorrow on the 2015 film “Jurassic World,” which rekindled the dinosaur franchise and grossed an impressive $1.67 billion globally, as well as its sequel “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” in 2018. During this period, he also contributed to Legendary’s “Monsterverse” production, “Kong: Skull Island,” the latest Star Wars saga, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” and the 2019 release, “Detective Pikachu.”

Lately, he’s been involved in the development of “The Legend of Zelda” remake for Sony and Nintendo, with Wes Ball directing it. He also just finished work on a joint Transformers/G.I. Joe movie project from Paramount, starring Chris Hemsworth.

He is repped by Verve and Ginsburg Daniels.
